Business Tax Climate Index & Ranking
« on: September 11, 2003, 11:27:00 am »

I just found this online. It ranks how well the tax system of each state affects it's business, taking together corporate income tax, individual income tax, sales/gross receipts tax, the state's fiscal balance, and the "conformity of the state's tax system with other systems." (Not sure what that last part meant, but it seems accurate enough!)

Here we are:

Wyoming 1
New Hampshire 2
Alaska 5
South Dakota 6
Delaware 15
Vermont 20
Montana 22
North Dakota 32
Idaho 33
Maine 43

The economic powerhouse of Texas scores 13, while the similarly powerful economy of California ranks 49. (Mississippi ranks 50, mostly because it's also among the poorest states in the country). My own Maryland, which violently taxes everything that moves, ranks 31.

Clearly, Wyoming and New Hampshire are the best choices for those seeking to start up a new business. Alaska and South Dakota are almost as good. South Dakota consistently out-performs North Dakota, which has a much more stifling income tax.
