That PHP chat client makes me want to shoot myself!  It appears to borrow commands from IRC, but does not seem to be IRC based.  Am I wrong?  Can we get an IRC server?  Java IRC clients are much easier to use that this irritating, constantly-page-refreshing client.

I have an IRC server that you all are welcome to use.  I can also point you to a couple of good Java IRC clients.  Please let me know if I can help.

Regards,
Ian

I agree, Ian.  Certainly if you have some ideas about better chat programs, throw them out there!  What I'm looking for:

No auto-refresh
Ability to save chat transcript
Moderator function

Nice to have, but not essential:
voice and video capabilites

Adam may already have something in mind, not sure yet.

I have made suggestions here:
http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?board=43;action=display;threadid=8144

Voice and Video get complicated.  I suggest IRC with your choice of a web-based client as suggested in the other thread, or a stand-alone client like mIRC.  ( http://mirc.com )  mIRC supports logging and all kinds of things.  IRC supports moderator functions and there's no irritating refresh.

IRC is the oldest way, and still the most preferred way to chat on the internet.  It's been around since before the web had graphics!

This chat has gone pretty well so far.  We're past the more formal Q&A stuff and are now chatting about a variety of topics.  21 people still in chat as I write this if you'd like to stop by...

Caught a portion of it.  It was very hard to watch, with all the refreshing.

Here's what we're discussing in the web forum:

Great chat last night!  There were lots of good questions and quite a few people showed up.  Tom has put the transcript up, for anyone who was interested but couldn't attend.

Thanks to Jason and everyone who attended!
