Gaming forum called "Potsmokers' Lounge." Two people implied they'd join, with mostly positive responses, but half the posts in the thread are from someone who, while posting on a forum for pot smokers, and having admitted to smoking marijuana for 9 years, thinks legalization is a bad idea. *bangs head*
But, hey, if we get a signup out of it, it's worth the time it took to post.

I'm going to go to the Bill Maher forum and pretend I just heard about the Free State Project and how good of an idea it is, so that GhostCow's walk will be moved to the top of the list and with the hope that the enthusiasm will build.  On that forum, my name will be monn0016.

SLASHDOT: GAME THE SYSTEM
« Reply #183 on: May 27, 2004, 05:04:39 pm »

I just made a post on Slashdot, the purpose of which was basically to make a big, bold link to freestateproject.org. I typically do this whenever there's a vaguely freedom-related discussion thread (as there often is on Slashdot):

http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=109082&cid=9267731

The comment got moderated to "+5, Interesting", (hooray for me!) which means that it will be read by literally TENS of THOUSANDS of people today.

Now, here's where you other porcs come in: posts on Slashdot are moderated by other Slashdot readers. The more you read & post on Slashdot, the more likely you'll be given "moderator points" to assign to other people's posts.

SO, the idea, very simply, is to game the system. Any time I have moderator points to assign, my Yahoo! IM status will be set to:
Porcs: I have Slashdot Moderator points!!
My Yahoo ID is: laugh_at_the_stars

SO... please add my Yahoo handle above to your 'friend' list. If you see my status message as above, post a link to the FSP webpage, and I'll mod it up. Try and make it a vaguely on-topic post please.

I'll be doing the same. Let's give this a try.

Who's with me?

Dada, I didn't get sent a password either when I created an account, but if you ask to have your pass mailed to you, that works.

Worth a try, but those of us with good karma are less likely to help, since gaming the system will usually result in worse karma, since you end up overmoderatoring... (the metamods is where the gaming is fixed)

But I've got 5 mod points waiting for someone to mention the FSP.
Just message me here and let me know... (grin)

Slashdot has a place where they'll accept press releases for possible publication, so I sent them Randall's PR :)

Can I suggest that you avoid responding to the Slashdot Trolls?
It's a waste of time.

I'm all for taking every single issue related to freedom and posting a message similar to "This is why I've joined the FSP and I'm moving to New Hampshire.... because this is wrong, and we're doing something about it...." along those lines.

Messages like that, moderated up to Interesting and Informative will likely be considered valid moderation, and accrue better karma...
And Karma means you are heard better in the first place.

Avoid responding to an article after the first hour it's out  It's a waste of time, since you've already missed thousands of readers.  Better to wait for the next freedom related article.  These days, there are about 2 or 3  a day, without stretching the point of raising the FSP idea completely in context.

Added: to prove the point, look at all these stories someone could have FSP-related from just the last 30 stories on Slashdot:

I'm really excited about the momentum here!!
Slashdot is an easy way for us to reach TENS OF THOUSANDS of people -- and what's more, Slashdot readers tend to be Libertarian-leaning.

For this "gaming the system" to really work well -- to get our Freestateproject.org links moderated UP to +5 where thousands of people will see them -- we need to be able to move FAST.

I've already added bookish_lass to my Yahoo IM (thanks!) Any Porc on Slashdot can add me as a Yahoo friend -- please do! "laugh_at_the_stars@yahoo.com" As soon as ANY of us get moderator points, we'll see each other's status change and can mod each other up. Any questions or problems getting accounts set up or using Slashdot or Yahoo, I'm happy to try and help. Just email me, I'll do my best to help.

There is going to be more traffic and need for quick action than then FSP message boards are really designed for -- this is a natural for Instant Messaging.

Lastly: Dada Orwell's point is well-made. There's a Freedom-relevant story on slashdot at least once a day. This is very fertile soil we are working!!

Simple Slashdot Tips To Get Our Message Seen!
« Reply #193 on: May 29, 2004, 11:38:38 am »

To get your password mailed to you, go to:
http://slashdot.org/login.pl?op=mailpasswdform

... and remember that we all need to be on each others' "friend" lists on IM. Again, the idea is:

* If you see an even remotely freedom-related topic (and you will!), quickly post a few words and a link to freestateproject.org

* After you post, check IM to see if any other Porcs' statuses indicate that they have moderator points. If they do, message them and let them know you just posted a link to the FSP webpage

* If Slashdot's webpage says "you have moderator points", set your IM status to something like 'I have Slashdot Moderator points!'. Note that this is a semi-random event.

* Slashdot won't let you moderate a discussion in which you have posted. So, when you get your 5 moderator points, DON'T post -- just moderate UP other Porcs' posts. That's why you set your IM status, so others know to message you to moderate up their posts.

Get it?
 ;)
