IOW, the label "Member" will be replaced by "Participant."
Is that right?
Member and Participant have long been used interchangably. Within the last several months, FSP leadership decided that Participant is the more accurate and official term of the two, and should be the term of choice.

Would it not be simpler and reduce transaction costs to keep the term "Member"? Will "FSP Member" be changed to "FSP Participant" under everyone's name on the Message Board?
Jason posted about this recently, basically to agree with you that changing the tags would be an ordeal and not worth the hassle at this time.

So we now have three categories of folks:

Participants = people who have pledged to move to the Free State according to the Statement of Intent & Participation Guidelines (counted toward the 20,000)

Friends = people who can't commit to moving to New Hampshire but support the Free State Project (not counted toward the 20,000)

Pioneers = people who already live in New Hampshire and support the Free State Project (not counted toward the 20,000)

One group is excluded. Therefore I propose adding a fourth category to include these folks:
Resident Members = Participants (I prefer the term "Members") who have already moved to NH. (They have been unofficially referred to as "early movers.")

"Early movers"..it's such a catchy title.  Makes it sound like we'd never need x-lax.   ;)

A problem with "early movers" (to get this thread out of the toilet ;D) involves its application once 18,999 Members have moved to NH. #19,000 will be labelled an "early mover!"

Compared to #19,001, he/she would still be an early mover.   ;)

I don't really see a need to give a new title to folks who've moved.  I'm a member now, and I'm going to be a member 10 months from now in NH.  (I know, I know, the "participant" reeducation isn't taking with me. ;))  I can see keeping a count, but if we don't watch out we're going to be spending more time figuring out what to call folks than recruiting them.

I don't really see a need to give a new title to folks who've moved.

According to Amanda's suggested taxonomy, this group would be excluded. Consequently, it's not a matter of giving them a "new" title, but rather giving them a title, i.e., including them.

In addition, if the "Resident Members" are identified as such, it would allow Members who are ready to move to spot people on the Message Board to ask for suggestions concerning recognizing and dealing with any problems involved in moving.

Actually, they aren't excluded--they're just ahead of the game, having already done what they only agreed to do at a later date.

Amanda's terminology is just fine, because in order to move as an FSP member, you have to have pledged to move first.

Kater,

I appreciate your clarification.

I think both of our interpretations are legitimate--your literal one and mine, which relies on inferring from the wording that they have not yet moved.

In either case, I think it would be useful to have two separate categories, one consisting of non-resident members and the other of resident members.

Would it be accurate to say that all 3 are considered Porcupines?

It's my personal opinion that only Participants are Porcupines, technically. But I'm pretty sure there are other officers who disagree with this opinion.

Anyone can call themselves a Porcupine if they'd like.

But we're only counting the people who have joined & signed the SOI as Participants. The 20,000 number is just the people who have signed up to move to NH, or signed up prior to the vote.

Does anyone else find it strange that a group of migrants is going to call a group of natives, who aren't going anywhere, "Pioneers"?  Perhaps we should call ourselves "Autochthony".

We went with Pioneers because they were there first. The first wave, as it were.

My wife Irena and I moved to New Hampshire last month.
She was born in what was then communist Czechoslovakia;
part of being a girl there was being a "Red Pioneer".
Sort of like being a Girl Scout, but much less palatable.

And now she's a Porcupine Pioneer.

Ironic, really.   ;)

Wouldn't it be useful, (as a sign of public support), to list, somewhere, the total number of Friends and Pioneers? Some fence-sitters might wonder about the Total support for the FSP.

Did anything ever come of this?  I have often wondered just how many "friends" there were.  :)
