Establishing an Intellectual Beachhead for Liberty
« on: January 22, 2004, 08:25:02 pm »

"In his essay The Intellectuals and Socialism, F.A. Hayek argued that the success of the Left in the 20th century was due to their focus on cultural and intellectual elites...Hayek argued that the 'mass man' takes his views from intermediary institutions, such as the media and the schools. These intermediary institutions in turn took their cues from the intellectuals: philosophers, political scientists, economists, and fine artists. In the early 20th century, intellectuals became overwhelmingly socialist..."

--Jason Sorens, "Establishing a Beachhead for Liberty"

Libertarians need to take the Ivory Towers away from the socialists. Only when WE are the "intellectual elites," will our ideas spread to the general population.

The FSP includes many highly educated people. I was wondering if any of us (Besides Jason, of course) were in, on planning on going into academia. I would like to go into academia myself, to help spread the ideals of liberty. Anyone here work in an academic job? Anybody have any advice on how to get one?

A crucial part of the battle for liberty will have to be fought in the Ivory Towers.

"The men who are not interested in philosophy absorb its principles from the cultural atmosphere around them--from schools, colleges, books, magazines, newspapers, movies, television, etc. Who sets the tone of a culture? A small handful of men: the philosophers. Others follow their lead, either by conviction or by default."

Would this be a Platonic thread?

For my own edification, care to elaborate on your definition of an "academic?"

Someone who works, or has worked, in a college or university, such as a professor. Usually the person has a Master's degree or a PhD.

I plan to move to NH once I get my Bachelor's degree, and then work toward a Master's. I was wondering if anyone in the FSP had a Master's degree and could give me some advice on how to go about getting one.
