For anyone who is thinking of moving to the Keene area, here's a good chance to make your voices heard with our public officials:

From the KTA mailing list:

Hello to all,

This is NOT your monthly newsletter...it is merely an alert regarding a change to the City of Keene Budget without benefit of a public hearing.

Much has been written regarding Keene State Student problems which lead into the question of apartment rentals and then into Code Enforcement.  The Keene City Council is going to vote THIS Thursday a proposal that would add $100,000 to the current budget, authorize a new program to force apartment inspections and would put 2 part time inspectors on the City Payroll, BUT no public hearing has been held.

There are many reasons for this proposal and I can list the pros and cons, but right now the MAIL issue is the absence of a public hearing so those reasons can be discussed.

Clearly, from the report produced BY the City, this involves 3,800 dwellings and only about 700 of those house students of Keene State.  That means all the landlords for those properties, including the  property owner who only has one rental unit, have not voiced their opinion or concerns.

The issues were presented at committee meetings rarely attended by the public and yet, a department change, a change of ordinances, a $100,000 budget issue are all before the council this Thursday and the public was not asked what they thought.

While there are varying opinions among those few who know of it, it seems it passed committee with a 4-1 vote and will likely pass the Council vote.

YOU NEED TO CALL YOUR CITY COUNCILOR before Thursday and say WAIT!  There should be a PUBLIC hearing on this issue!  OR you can email many of the...go to this address and any Councilor whose name is in blue can be emailed.  Just click on the name and it will give you the email address:  http://www.keenetaxpayers.org/citycouncilors.html

If you DON'T act by this Thursday AM it is probably a "done deal"...don't opt out..call and tell the City to WAIT until the issues can be weighed by those who it will affect.

They are going to hold a public hearing on the inspectors, but moved to charge the landlords for the inspection fees.  :-[
