Been eyeing FSP for a long time, looking to move ASAP
« on: September 13, 2014, 08:31:54 pm »

My partner and I have been eyeing FSP for a long time, since we're both registered Libertarians. Unfortunately, we have been in and out of school and work for years, and then we had a baby, and moving just wasn't a possibility. But right now, we're at a turning point and ready to get mobile. The problem is neither of us are employed right now (unless my meager self-employment counts) - it's part of the reason we can move, but also most of the reason it's difficult.

I've been looking for work in MA for a while now, and the job openings in my field there are much better than what I've been able to find here in FL. The plan has been for me to stay with family for a little while, while I save up enough to relocate the rest of my family. I have not looked around in NH yet because I don't have any family in the state to help me while I look for work and transition. But if there are resources available within the FSP community to help us with the move and transition, that would make a huge difference.

We don't have much, but we have a lot of passion and energy to commit to liberty and justice. I have my BA in psychology and have been looking for case management work, preferably working with families or at-risk youth. My partner has some college under his belt but no degree yet. He has a lot of experience working in student government as a justice and used to volunteer with Teen Court when we were kids. He wants to go to law school and become a public defender, but the possibilities for him are pretty much endless, if given the right opportunity. Any suggestions on where to look for work, or if anyone here is looking to hire, let me know.

I've been itching for an exodus from this state since my family moved here when I was 8. As our kid inches toward school age, the urgency to move is greater still. Hopefully we can make this happen.

Hello, it's not connected to FSP, but you could look at helpx under New England.  http://www.helpx.net/hostlist.asp?page=1&search=&host_region=509&host_ccode=&host_state_id=&host_category=&radio=or&network=5
I have seen a few listings from NH.  You might not be interested in farm work and some might only be looking for summer help; if not you could stay for free and explore when you aren't working.

For help with moving, you should check out http://www.porcmanor.com and the FSP Welcome Wagon (https://freestateproject.org/move/welcome-wagon) and FSP Job Alert (https://www.facebook.com/groups/fspjobalert/).

This is great! I wouldn't mind doing farm work or other odd jobs. Right off the bat I see a daycare in Lexington, MA that could work...

I'll have to keep an eye on that Porcmanor site. Thanks, that certainly opens up some of my jobsearch options.

Right now I'm looking at a company that has some locations in Lowell and Lawrence, which would be a 30 minute commute from Manchester. Anything I should know if I choose to live in NH but work in MA?

You'll pay MA income taxes. :/ Also, be sure not to have a loaded firearm in your car in MA, even if you're NH licensed. You may want to look into border communities like Salem and Hudson for easy commutability into places like Lowell and Lawrence.

Awe damn. I didn't even think of that, the income taxes. How bad do they suck?

Actually, MA income taxes are not terrible: 5.2% with a personal exemption of $4400. http://taxfoundation.org/article/state-personal-income-tax-rates-and-brackets-2014-update
