NH Towns Ranked by Crime Rates
« on: June 26, 2014, 12:12:35 pm »

This data comes from http://www.city-data.com/city/New-Hampshire.html
Goal: Get violent crime rate below 5 per year per thousand pop.
(Note: In my next post I redefine Violent Crime, moving burglary from the Violent category to the Theft category.)

_______________________12.7_31.2_2.5_San Francisco (for comparison)

Goal: Get these towns below 5 per thousand in violent crimes. Of course, thefts should be reduced too.
5.05   Seabrook
5.16   Portsmouth
6.62   Nashua
6.66   Concord
6.70   Claremont
6.79   Berlin
6.84   Gilford
7.09   Keene
7.28   Derry
8.37   Rochester
8.62   Somersworth
9.34   Belmont
11.8   Laconia
13.6   Manchester

A lot of towns did not have data. This data is only the crimes that are reported. Many are not reported. Murders are probably the most accurately reported crimes.

Viol means Sum of all Violent Crimes, i.e. murder, rape, robbery, assault and burglary. I include burglary because it's frightening when a burglar enters one's home, whether one is home at the time or not. T/V means the ratio of Thefts per Violent Crimes. I'm considering Thefts as Nonviolent Crimes in that they don't hurt or frighten people directly. I left out auto thefts and arson. Auto thefts should have been included with thefts and Arson should have been included as a Violent Crime.

Wouldn't robbery fall into burglary?  Perhaps I'm confused as to the difference between these two.

Apparently, "Robbery is the crime of taking or attempting to take something of value by force or threat of force or by putting the victim in fear."

Better Comparison?
Viol = murder, rape, robbery & assault; Thef = burglary & theft.
(I moved burglary from the Violence to the Theft column, since it's not as violent as the other crimes.)

Also to get theft (& burglary) below 10 per thousand pop. per year.

That is not exactly a comprehensive list of all the towns in NH.  Not by a wide margin.  Around 85% of NH towns and cities are missing.

Even if there were a full list?
How does a municipality act to achieve the "goal"?

It seems to me that one way to reduce violent crime, i.e. murder, rape, robbery and assault, would be by deputizing citizens who have no felony convictions for such violent crimes (not deputizing them for pay), encouraging them to own weapons for defense and training them in how to defend themselves and others and how to help prevent criminal acts. Also, Matthew 25:34-40 explains the need for everyone who's able to help the needy.

Legalize victimless crimes? Encourage the police to focus on real crime?

Police would come into play after the violent act...
That is how the counts are made.

We have that. It's called a citizen's arrest. But it doesn't stop the violent act... it occurs afterward.
