Gangs in NH
« on: May 18, 2012, 12:44:09 pm »

I was wondering if anyone had any real life info (not an .gov report) on gangs in NH.  Are there any areas that have major gang activity?

Yes, there are gangs in NH.  The 2 gangs I know of in Keene are the Juggalos and the Free Staters.  The only gang I know of in Manchester is the Free Staters.  I'm not familiar with gangs in the rest of the state.  I'm not sure if either of these groups are technically gangs because I don't know the legal definitions but the cops claim they are gangs.

As for street gangs, that's a much larger problem on the West Coast than the East Coast.  There are certainly mafia issues on the East Coast but that seems to be a minimal to nonexistent problem in NH.  We don't have a lot of strip clubs in NH.  There doesn't appear to be a large sex trade in NH.  Much of the Hispanic population isn't associated with Mexico where the gangs and the government are at war.  The casinos/card rooms are for charity.  The animal races are simulcast.  In most towns, trash pick up is done by the individual or a small company.  There aren't a lot of ocean fisherman in NH and it tends to be small time stuff.  Union membership, especially among private sector workers, is low in NH.

I am curious as to your question?  NH has the lowest crime in the US most years.  2 of the 3 border states are usually in the bottom 3 when it comes to crime rates.  NH only has 1 city with around 110,000 people and another with around 90,000 and the cities are separated by mostly rural, often wealthy, people.

There are definitely some problems in the cities and towns near the MA border where criminals with long rap sheets or gang members visit NH and sometimes cause problems.

Just wondering.  I grew up in a place with a lot of gang activity and while I figured it was a lot less of a problem up there, I had to ask since we're making the move shortly.

The Blue Light Gang is, by far, the most dangerous street gang around.

I believe you are overlooking the abundance of Motorcycle Club (MC) activity in the state.  Not all clubs are 1% 'ers - however there are criminal clubs and feeder clubs in NH that are engaged in illegal activity and frequent shootouts.  Hells Angels, Diablos and Outlaws to name a few.

Thanks for the info, that's what I was talking about.

I've never had problems with any of them.  The Angels pretty much own Weirs Beach, and it's one of the most nicest parts of NH to visit.

I've been threatened numerous times, and occasionally attacked, by Blue Light Gang members.  They're completely sociopathic, have no integrity or honor, and frequently go after your friends and family if you cross them.

Care to be a little more specific about the term "frequent shootouts"?

I know a few guys who are fairly high up in MC clubs here in New Hampshire. Although they  typically get a bad rap, I've never had anything but a positive encounter with either the Hells Angels or Outlaws.

I've found being respectful to them has always gotten the favor returned.

Even when pulling them over.

I think MC's are great

Gangs to me being from California I think mean something than NH gangs. We have a ton of b.s. out here and in all cities everywhere. I can't picture MS13 bulldogs or asian gangs rolling through keene lol. I could be wrong though, the biker clubs on the other hand makes perfect sense especially with the no helmet laws there. California will odds are outlaw riding motorcycles soon due to being unsafe LOL

Hells Angels

I stood behind one in the line at the Starbucks at Manchester airport once.  If anyone is wondering how I knew it's because he had "Hells Angels" tattooed on the back of his bald scalp.  Which is not something someone who wants to live long does if they aren't part of the gang.

Yeah I think MCs are about the worst of it, in Manch there may be a couple very small gangs in the sense of being black/hispanic dudes who roll together and cause a little trouble, but nowhere near what CA, NY or any of these other places would see. Hell, they're even less noticeable than the gangs in PA where I moved from.

Keep in mind, New Hampshire is one of the lowest-crime states in the entire country, if not the lowest, and the biggest city only has 110,000 people. I doubt there's anything like what you're talking about in NH if it doesn't happen in Manchester or Nashua.

On the other kind, we get all kinds of theft occurring wherever, my store in Newington has lots of problems with shoplifters.

As far as street gangs go, the only place in NH that I've run into that sort of stuff is Manchester, Salem and Nashua. Those places have a lot of overflow from the Lowell and Lawrence areas of MA.

The MCs are here, but don't bother anyone outside of their own circles. It is a different world than the typical urban street gang.

Yeah, have you spent a winter in NH? :-)  Not a lot of hookers or drug dealers want to spend half the year inside and out of work or otherwise freeze.

I can see it now, guy standing outside with snow on the ground.  Freezing.  Car rolls up and rivals start shooting but the guy can't shoot back cause he's got six layers of clothes on and can't get to his gun.  Car tries to speed off and spins out in the snow bank.

You do have a point.  However, Detroit has worse winters than southern NH and Chicago is comparable to southern NH.  Those are 2 very dangerous cities.  Other dangerous cities with similar or worse weather at Milwaukee, Gary and several of the cities in Upstate NY.

There is also a thread about gangs in Manchester on the Shire Society Forum, http://forum.shiresociety.com/general-manchester-discussion/gangs-in-manchester/
