Where should I stay AFTER PorcFest?
« on: May 12, 2010, 07:34:24 pm »

I'm staying an additional 3 days, 2 nights after PorcFest ends.  I'm flying out of Manchester NH on June 29th, Tuesday evening.  I want to definitely check out Boston and Portsmouth.  Is Portsmouth that awesome that I should book a hotel there or should I go the much more convenient route of booking a hotel in Manchester for easy access to my airport?  I don't mind renting a car for a couple days either.

One more question, which city should I visit on Sunday?  Portsmouth or Boston?

I'd recommend visiting Keene on Sunday and attending Social Sundays.  Then take 101 over the mountains to Manchester that night and stay in a hotel.  I don't recommend Boston at all.  But driving on the coast on 1A from Seabrook to Portsmouth is a fantastic idea.

Of course, you seem to want different things.  If you want to go to Boston, it is much cheaper to park in Boston on the weekend than during the week so check it out on Sunday if you drive there.  I cannot recommend driving along 1A from Seabrook to Portsmouth enough, though.  You may even want to drive into New Castle island, right off Portsmouth.

Either way, check out Taproom Tuesdays in Manchester or only a couple hours if you get the chance.  Also, I think you meant June 29th.

Portsmouth.

It is small enough to see in a day walking around (boston is not)
It is in NH (boston is not)
easier driving
etc
etc

I have a similar issue to deal with.
Planning to leave Porcfest right after the official end on Sunday June 27.
Then I want to visit various places in the southern part of the state (starting trying to decide where to live when I move there next year) before flying out of Manchester Tuesday mid-day.

Some places I may want to check out: Grafton, Laconia, Franklin, Concord, Manchester, Keene, Rochester, Portsmouth (it's a lot to see in two days, probably wouldn't have time to do more than drive through if I try to see it all).

Anyway, I need somewhere to crash Sunday and Monday nights, probably either Keene or the seacoast on Sunday, and somewhere near Manchester Monday night. These locations are still flexible as I would have time to get to the airport Tuesday from any of these places. I will check porcmanor but also wanted to put out the request to the people on this forum.

You'll want to be in Keene on Sunday. Big after-party there, same as last year.

Yeah, I've been pretty undecided, what with the rivalry between certain individuals in Seabrook and Keene, and thinking at one time that both places had a social event at the same time. Even knowing otherwise now, I just learned that the seacoast weekend event is on Saturday now, I still have some reluctance about Keene. I think I am afraid of the idea of actually participating in civil disobedience, even though I agree with it. However, I guess I don't have to overcome that hangup before hanging out there, right? I guess you have a few of the political types too.

Maybe if I move to Keene I can try to explain to all the socialists about our areas of agreement with them and try to get them to work with you instead of bad-mouthing you. I haven't had much luck with my liberal brother but then again I do have a relationship to maintain there, so I just kind of stopped trying to discuss politics and economics with him. Maybe I will be able to try harder with other people.

My other problem is one of getting to see everything I want to see. I still want to see the Seacoast and Manchester and Grafton and maybe the Lakes region (probably lowest on my list). I don't have much time (only 2 days after leaving Porcfest before flying back home). Fortunately I will have my rental car so will be able to drive around quite a bit. I was going to stay at Max's house Sunday night but I know he's not going to be there, and no social event. I'll have to see how I feel about hanging out with a crowd right after Porcfest (generally I'm not a very social guy).

What time is the party in Keene? Maybe I can do some of my Manchester visiting before heading over there.

So we've decided to stay in Manchester for the duration of my trip.

Right after PorcFest on Sunday evening we will be touring Manchester during the day, and then off to party in Boston at night.
On Monday, we will be hitting up Concord --> then Hampton --> then Portsmouth --> then party in Manchester that night.
On Tuesday, we will visit Nashua --> then we're back to the Manchester airport.

I don't see ourselves spending anymore than 3 hours (during the day) on any of these cities, although I may be wrong and have to adjust plans.  Having said that, can anybody recommend me as to things WE MUST check out or do while I'm at any of the cities I just mentioned?  I'm looking for daytime things in particular.

Also, if we had to skip a city, which would you say we should skip?  Nashua or Concord? (Don't say Boston!  :P)

Manchester's a great city--though I doubt you'd be able to see everything in just three days.  Be sure to meet up with as many freedom folks as possible.  They'll show you the ropes, eh.

Sorry, Keeniacs. Even though I think there is some value in your approach to liberty activism, I don't feel like I can participate in it personally, mostly because I hate confrontations or the possibility of going to jail. Therefore, I am not at the present considering it as a place to live after my move to NH. Therefore, given the time constraints of my brief visit to NH, and the other places I wish to visit, I am putting off visiting Keene until after I move. However, I will reexamine my reasons and assumptions when I live in NH and have more time to evaluate such things.

P.S. I really do want to hang out with you guys, I'm just not sure I will have time after Porcfest.

P.P.S. Can it be a P.S. in the middle of the post?

Here is my revised plan after leaving Lancaster:

Sunday, return to southern part of state. Possibly detour and drive around in Lakes region. Drive out to seacoast and see what I can.
Attend Portsmouth social event, stay at Max's house with his roommates (if he still has space for me).
Monday morning, return to Manchester, see some stuff.
Afternoon, drive up to Grafton, tour and picnic.
Return to Manchester, possibly checking out Franklin or Concord on the way down.
Monday night, crash somewhere in and around Manchester.
Tuesday morning, finish visiting Manchester and/or Concord.
Fly out around noon.

What is this party in Manchester on Monday night, JM?

Are you going to have a car now or will you still need rides?

Wish I had thought to plan on heading to Keene for the after-party, but when I made my reservations with Rogers I added an extra day to leave on Monday and head down to Portsmouth to check out the area until Wednesday.  Is there anything in that area that I just NEED to see?  Any recommendations?  I'll still have the two dogs with me as well, so outdoorsy things are probably in order.

Can't wait to see everyone up there!   ;D

You could always attend Liberty Forum next year in Nashua.  See Nashua/Derry/Salem/Northern MA/Boston then if you want.

Haha its not a party in specific, but we're gonna check out the nightlife in Manchester (if there is one).  I don't know how early you plan on crashing Monday night, but you should link up with us that night and hit the town.  I would also be interested in moving my tour of Concord on Monday and checking it out with you on Tuesday morning, but sounds like you fly out relatively early - which probably nullifies all those plans.  We fly out at 5pm.

We're going to wait until Friday to see if we get any responses to our post asking for a Wednesday early evening ride up to Roger's.  If we do, then I will take you up on your Sunday ride back down to Manchester and rent a car for the remaining 3 days.  IF NOT, then we're going to rent a car for an entire week right off the airport on Wednesday.

There is a night life in Manchester.  Even though the local government has shut down some of it over the last few years, it is still full of entertainment.  Manchvegas baby!
