Event idea for 2010: Porc Job Fair or networking event
« on: February 21, 2010, 07:00:41 pm »

I looked through the agenda on the other PorcFests and was surprised to not find anything resembling a job fair or networking event  :o

I would like to suggest this idea for visiting participants like myself who must find a job prior to or close to moving.  Of course, finding a job is most participants top priority and I think it would be great to have an event where we could meet and network with Porc friendly and owned businesses.  Along with going on the bus tours, this would be hugely beneficial for us!

This is an excellent idea!

We have tried to have them in the past with little success.
Lancaster is in the north country of New Hampshire. (2-2.5 hrs to Montreal)
We have Porc Fest at Rogers because it is the nicest campground large enough to hold our event.

Most of the jobs are in the southern 1/3 of the state and getting recruiters up to Lancaster has been painfully difficult.
Also NH is a small state so most recruiters are looking to fill jobs in Boston since it is a much larger city.
As far as working for another Porcupine.  Those jobs are very rare since most people work for someone else or are self employed with no additional employees.

What field are you in?
You may be able to start job hunting while you are here.

In 2007  I came to the Porc Fest 2 months before my move.  I showed up on the Sunday before the big scheduled events.
I packed the following with my camp gear.
A suit and related gear for dressing professionally.
Trakphone with a New Hampshire phone number. (They took my impending move more seriously with a local #)
Resume
The contact info for my appointments and interviews. (I didn't own a lap top at the time)
Listings for apartments to look at.
I went on 2 interviews and lined up a third while in NH.
I also found an apartment that week.

I spent 3 days of the week driving around doing this.  It was well worth it.
I landed a job before I moved which made everything so much easier.

We had something like this at at least some of the Liberty Forums. That venue might be a better fit for job-seeking.
