Wife will agree to move if I win at a silly card game: worth it?
« on: November 16, 2009, 09:28:35 pm »

My wife likes Magic the Gathering. I couldn't care less about it.
She declared that she'd move, kids and all, to NH if I win.
Sounds great until I thought it through:

A. I have to put time into something I currently dislike.
B. It could damage her pride signifigantly since she has great skill at the game.
C. We put the fate of our family upon a game instead of mutual interest.
D. I may never win, thus wasting effort that might have convinced her in another way.

One one hand I want to do whatever it takes to get there. On the other, I don't want to bring a sore loser with me.
What to do?

Sometimes the way to win is not to play the game.

Sounds to me like that's her playful way of saying, "when hell freezes over." She probably expects that you'll never put the time into learning to play, and even if you did it's unlikely you'd rival her skill level for a long time.

As a long-time MTG player (playing since 5th Edition in 1996?), I suggest giving the game a chance, but don't let it have anything to do with a serious decision.

But do tell your wife there are plenty of like-minded nerds who will play Magic with her when she gets to NH!

If she's a Magic fan, we have tons of games going on here--and people with decks that will blow her mind, bud.  I've been around probably two or three Magic the Gathering gatherings in just the last month.

Always good for a crowd.

No dude, ask yourself why you're belittling something that is so important to her!  You haven't told her about the Magic meetups here in New Hampshire, eh.  If any thing, YOU should be ashamed for denying her countless hours of entertainment competing with some of the biggest Magic nerds in the country!

Have her write down the terms of the bet, then study the life of Amarillo Slim on how to win proposition bets.

Y'all should try to compromise and be more open minded.  You give the game a try, just for the fun of it.  Take a family vacation in NH, just for the fun of it.  No pressure...

I just bought a bunch of Magic cards.  Word is a Cheshire county game night may be formed.

I think this is the key here. Relocating yourself, wife and kids is a big step, and something that should be done with both parties in agreement. If not, there could be resentment and possible relationship issues down the road.

What you need to do is come visit NH, introduce her to the many _women_ (and men) who play MtG here, and she'll be ready to go home and pack.
I'm not kidding.  We have many cases where the wife was skeptical at first, and quickly become the one _more_ ready to move.

At the recent MtG 'noob' night, we had one table with more women than men (and not all of the women present by a longshot):

There are already MtG game nights in Manchester, and I've heard talk of organizing an MtG/RPG group on the seacoast (at a previous Wicked Wednesday meetup).  It's off the hook out here.

Assuming this isn't a hoax (though it sure sounds like it), a card game is no way to make a mutual, major life-changing decision.
