comming to new hamshire!
« on: August 03, 2009, 10:42:18 am »

hey everyone ,I'm happy to announce that after looking into the fsp for sometime my family and I are selling the house and moving to NH
and we have it narrowed down to portsmouth, or Manchester, does anyone know how the public schools are in this area?

just a side note, has anyone thought of any fund raising, donation,or sponsorship programs to help other freestaters get there, that may be struggling financially,
if so I would love to help someone else who needs to get up there

Welcome!  Have you signed the statement of intent?

Portsmouth and Manchester are both active areas for Free Staters so be sure to let us know when you're getting in so you can get some help moving in.

I've read bad things about Manchester itself.   Some of the 'burbs in the Manchester vicinity do much better.

I don't know Portsmouth at all.

Welcome.

I've read a few threads on this topic on this board.   Yours may be the first note actually offering to fund such a thing, rather than asking for funding.

In the relative near future, I should be able to get down with and help such a program.

The Manchester 'burbs have pretty good schools, but the city itself is lacking in this department.  I don't know about Portsmouth.

www.greatschools.net might be helpful.

I would be interested in a chip in page to help movers on a case by case basis.

I like the idea of a case by case chip in page, lots of folds to work out though
i assume there would be some kind of application process
but who's to decide who gets help and who doesn't,that would be tough

I would say the people chipping in would get a vote.  Someone could present their case on the site (and perhaps a target dollar amount) and those who choose to can chip in.  In that senario people get to vote with their own positive contribution, instead of a "thumbs up or down" senario.

welcome.. and congrats on coming to NH.

I have seen this idea swung around many times.

I think that it would be best if we made it a LOAN and not a gift.

I am sure that we could get a few $K.

Then 'loan' it out to the person and then when they pay it back  (with interest) it is ready for the next mover.
and maybe more donation make it so that it is ready for 2 movers... etc etc etc

That's a good idea.  However, it is pretty risky and needs quite a bit of money - which I don't have.  However, if you are thinking about moving to Portsmouth, you may have that type of money (since it is one of the most expensive areas of NH).  Maybe start something like that after you move here.

About the schools, Manchester has some of the worst government schools in NH.  You will find better government schools in most of the other towns.  I recommend at least a couple day visit before you move your family here.  Maybe visit on a Tuesday and Wednesday if possible (that way you can meet people at the weekly Tuesday event in Manchester and the weekly Wednesday event just north of Portsmouth in Dover).

Welcome!  That's great you're moving to NH.  I lived in Manchester for a while but now I'm in Portsmouth.  If you have any questions, let me know.  Also I'll see what I can find out about the schools here.

Good idea. Split the loans up and sell parts to investors. Then set up the derivative FSP loans.......haha

I think such charity money would be better spent in support of FSP outreach and marketing programs.  There are still millions of libertarians around the country who have never heard of us.  We need to reach them on the internet or though sympathetic groups.  Any money spent to get a person with no resources here could be otherwise invested to find and recruit 5 or 6 people with jobs to move here.  My 2 cents...

In any case, welcome home!  We love your Need 2B Free and your sense of charity.
