Yeh, originally they told us there was free wi-fi with very limited coverage.  That was back in March.  Evidently since then they've contracted with a service provider and now it costs $9.99 a day or $19.99 for the week.  At least that's the info from Carla's announcement.

I don't know if the new and improved (and costlier) service extends to more places around the campground.  I tried calling Roger's right now but no one answered.  If I find out, I'll post it here.

Brian has a good idea to try to get a volume discount.  My "official" position on said ad hoc arrangement is to discourage it.

IF the wifi does not cover the entire campground it would be a bit sad. I pland to bombard my friends at home with updates.

So in other words they’re breaking an (albeit oral) contract they had with the FSP.

Elaborating on the previous post, when Rogers was selected by the FSP for PorcFest, wireless was free (technically, complementary for paying to camp there, I suppose); this fact was given to the PorcFest organizers, who subsequently told many attendees about it. Now the wireless isn’t free. Sounds like they reneged on an agreement to me, no?

According to this, Verizon has expanded their 3G coverage to Lancaster. Anyone with this service, and a wireless router? We can set up our own wireless network for PorcFest attendees.

Jeremy nothing is settled in a contract until it is in writing.
The first Porc Fest the wifi only worked at the picnic tables closest to main building.  All most all of the campsites had no reception what so ever.  $19.99 for the week isn't nearly as painful $9.99 a day.
My house pays more than that a week to have internet here in Manchester.

Keep in mind you will also have to pay extra to use the laundromat, games in the arcade the cafe, and have extra people stay on your site.
Sites with water, electricity, canopies and double sized lots also cost more.  Why should wifi be any different.
Rogers is a campground in the middle of nowhere.   It is not a three star hotel catering to business travelers.  Compared to the price of 3G phone service from Verizon the wireless is not unreasonable.

I love the idea of Brian trying to negotiate a bulk rate for the event.   Thank you for working on it and add me to the pile for the group rate.

Is anyone interested in going in with me for negotiating a bulk rate?

I'd contribute toward it.

My brother might be interested in a group rate, too, assuming it isn't too late to get a site with electric.

Yes the Verizon 3G service worked fine at PF2009.

Yes, the campground's paid service area has expanded to include at least the first 3 streets of trailers, so should cover most all the camping areas.

No, you can't have access to my Verizon MiFi card to run your own network.  There's a 5Gig/month cap.  The porcs would eat that up in a day.

4.99/hour
9.99/day
19.99/week

You pay via credit card when you log on.
Seems pretty reasonable.

Does anyone know if Sprint or AT&T get good signals up there?

Had Sprint last year. There was signal, but very weak. Took a half hour to download an FTL episode. Watching porn was just right out.

I'm picturing you in that South Park episode when Stan's dad went without Internet porn for like a week.

Does anyone know if Alltel has coverage there at Rogers? I already have an Alltel wireless device, so if I get a laptop, and the coverage is ok there, I will have internet there without chipping in to a wifi group rate.

I was told my Alltel device should work anywhere an Alltel phone gets reception.
Has anyone taken an Alltel phone to Rogers for past Porcfests there?

Cancel what I said earlier about my brother chipping in. It looks like he will be unable to get any kind of government ID in time so that he can get on the plane with me. No brother for Porcfest '10.

Does anyone have any experience with T-Mobile coverage in that area? According to their coverage map, it's a "partner" coverage area. Did anyone use data while roaming there?
