Wifi at Rogers
« on: June 09, 2009, 01:31:57 pm »

I just talked to a person at Rogers about wifi. The good news is that their wifi covers the entire campground. Yay!

The bad news is that it costs 8 bucks a day. It sounds like the network is run by some other company so Rogers doesn't even deal with it.

So I was wondering if there has been any talk about getting a bulk discount from the vendor since I'm sure there will be a lot of people at Porcfest who will want to connect.

Is anyone interested in going in with me for negotiating a bulk rate?

Hi,  I am unclear as to exactly what you mean.  Do you mean physically GO IN with you to negotiate?  I can't do that because I am coming from Va. but I am willing to participate in the group rate should they give you one. Thanks, Tim

A few years ago they had a daily rate and multi-day rates.  The multi-day rates were much more reasonable.

Sorry. Perhaps I should have been more clear. If people are going up there to get away form it all, there would be no need to connect to the outside world. Unfortunately, I'm on-call on Friday and need to have access. No problem for me paying the eight bucks, but if I knew that 30 other people (for example) were interested in having wireless access, perhaps I could persuade the wifi provider to cut us a break to avoid losing some of us to free wifi somewhere else in town.

If you are interested in wifi at, say, five bucks a day instead of eight, let me know and perhaps I could use those numbers to negotiate a lower rate. I won't use your name or commit you in any way. I just need to know if there is enough interest for me to spend the time working with the provider for a cheaper rate.

I'd be all for cheaper wifi if possible. I'm also on call (though, I'm permanently on call, 24/7) and would need access in an emergency.

I am also on call.

Of course that means I'm hoping I can get away with not buying any wi-fi for the entire time I'm there.   But if I'm forced to connect in, cheaper is better.

Anyone happen to know how's the Verizon data coverage there? From the map it doesn't look good for EVDO... is the 1X decent though?

Is this for porc fest?  if so to bad im not going to be coming... because I would be able to get around that little dilemma lol... its "easy" to hack wireless...depending on if the person uses simple encryption which most people do....anyway hope you can all figure out some sort of group rate or something...you could also find someone that has a cell phone that can tether their phone to a computer and act as a modem to everyone and connect their computer to a wireless router and then give off wireless to the everyone else...depending on the cell coverage the speed may suck but that is a way to go...   anyway have fun

I don't want to hack the wireless at Rogers. That would be stealing. A private company put up the antennas and equipment for the company that runs Rogers, and they deserve to get paid for their equipment and labor.

I'm just suggesting that we ask the company for a break in the price, which might encourage more people to use the service, thereby generating more revenue for the service provider.

What you could do Is to set up a AD-HOC network.

computer 1 pays for access and then share its internet connection via windows built in internet sharing.

completely legal but might  not be 100 % moral.

---

If I am able to come to porc fest I can solve this

total cost for me would be maybe around $1300
plane ticket Gothenburg  - NY (Newark) (round trip) is about $690. To this comes all other cost ticket to porc fest, lodging etc.
I will do some thinking about it an decide in a few days.

Wait, what?

I was just talking with some of the PorcFest organizers this weekend, and I remember someone (I can’t remember who, unfortunately) saying there was free open wireless.

Mention of wireless that doesn’t cover the whole campground, and no mention of fee:—

K.D.,
Yes, there's wi-fi at the campground near the office.  It won't reach to your campsite, but we do have wireless access in the store, the cafe, at the registration desk, in the "Bingo Hall" (where the exhibitors are).  So you will be able to work from there as needed.  Glad to hear you get paid while attending PorcFest.

I'd guess that AT&T won't be very strong there.  Verizon is the best in most of the state.

You'll be covered in the main campground office area, even sitting in the hot tub!  Do you have a water-proof cover for the laptop?

Are you sure this guy wasn’t talking about something else? Maybe they have limited wireless for free, and campground-wide wireless for a fee?
