No.  They run a background check.  If you have a warrant for unpaid taxes, that's where the issue would arise.

Why are you folks taxed on your cars annually? That seems rather draconian. We just pay a registration fee here annually. I think mine was about $45 last year. Of course we get clobbered by the insurance companies to make up for it  :'(

Ah.  I can't imagine they'd put out a warrant.  I suspect they just assume you moved out of state.  If you don't pay, you don't get your new sticker and you get pulled over and ticketed for expired tags.  That or you steal someone else's stickers and hope your plates are never run.

NHs registration is part property tax... the automobile being property.

I'm guessing that's how NH pays its DMV employees.  :)

I know there are other states that tax property this way.  VA is one such state, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were plenty of others.

Yes, Calif. and Nevada also have very high annual auto registration fees (in the thousands on new, expensive vehicles) because property and various other taxes are included.

I guess I should be happy with what I have here before Gov. Corzine catches wind of this and launches another round of taxation on us :)
