Camp anywhere?
« on: February 04, 2008, 12:34:05 am »

I can barely afford to go.  If I do go Ill have to live out of a tent for the time.  Im sure people do but is it allowed?  Or should I just do what I want?

Porcfest happens on a government campground where you pay to camp.  You could always sleep in your car outside the campground for free.  There are also free camp spots in the hiking areas but they may be full.  A popular option is sharing a campsite with someone else.

If you cannot afford to pay to camp at a campground; then, maybe you should go to the Burning Porcfest in July where it will be free to camp.  However, Porcfest should have a lot more people than Burning Porcfest.

As we get closer to Porcfest people will be offering to share tentsites.  I've shared mine every PF in the past.  I probably won't attend this year.

PorcFest is a camping event, so most people, including myself, will be living out of our tent for the week.  As Lloyd pointed out, people like to share sites, so you can either wait for someone to post about sharing, post now to ask for someone to share with (in the lodging section of the PorcFest forum) and then reserve your site, or reserve the site now and then offer to share it.

And a slight clarification.  Burning Porcupine, as I understand it (correct me where I'm wrong), is a smaller, more basic, non-FSP sponsored gathering in Grafton aiming to recruit people to move there.  It should be fun, but it is not PorcFest.  If you want to see NH (including Grafton) and the spirit and community of the FSP, PorcFest is the festival to attend (though, you can easily attend both if you decide to stick around after the festival ;-)

As opposed to those privately owned ones where you camp for free.  What?  You'd pay there too?
So why did Keith decide to bring up the 'government owned' despite that Gunstock actually generates more revenue for the county, and is a far far better model than other skiareas that are truly 'government owned and operated'.  Is Gunstock perfect?  No...
But given the options for places big enough to hold PF, with facilities and good location, etc etc... it's the choice that was made.

Perhaps Keith will volunteer to find a place for PF09?  (cricket noises)  I thought so.

Exactly.  I plan to stay on both a government owned campground (and pay) and a privately owned campground (and donate the amount I wish) in NH this summer.

From the Laconia Citizen...
'Goddard said last year, Gunstock's budget, which is presented and approved by the County Delegation each year, was $7.1 million. The resort took in $6.4 million in revenue, which means it was $700,000 short of the approved budget.'

If you want to discuss the poor ski/snow seasons of the past couple years, its impact on Gunstock's profitability, and this year's windfall revenues due to record snow fall, please do so privately.  This doesn't seem relevant or productive to PorcFest...that is, unless perhaps you want to make plans to discuss this topic at PorcFest ;-)

I attended last year, will attend this year, and have already said my piece about Gunstock. (Which you can find in a thread about The Sad Socialist History of Gunstock.)

I didn't bitch about Gunstock, I'm a Belknap county property owner.
Just fixing the assumption that Gunstock is always a revenue generator.

Do you mean tent or tent site?

I am sure that people will share their tent sites.
