union density by state
« on: July 26, 2003, 04:44:03 pm »

Percentage of each state's nonagricultural wage and salary employees who are union members, 2001 (lower is better).  I think this is probably a better measure of union power than right-to-work laws.

Alaska - 22.1%
Delaware - 12.5%
Idaho - 7.8%
Maine - 13.0%
Montana - 13.5%
New Hampshire - 9.7%
North Dakota - 7.4%
South Dakota - 6.0%
Vermont - 10.9%
Wyoming - 9.3%

By comparison:
National average - 13.7%
Hawaii - 23.2%
Michigan - 22.1%
New York - 26.9%
South Carolina - 4.9%
North Carolina - 3.7%
Mississippi - 5.5%
Virginia - 5.4%
