I would like to suggest you could use two systems to classify messages: one following a chronological  order  keep the present system side by side with  as it's hard to find out if there are new messages.

There's a link for a list of the last 10 posts at the bottom of the forum home page.

I would agree that having a larger list, or possibly the latest 10 posts available for sub-boards would be good.

Often a single thread takes off and people uninterested in it find other recent posts shifted off the list.  Also, it's a rather active board and if you only check it once a day or further apart, the list of 10 most recent misses 90% of the activity.
