New Treasurer Needed
« on: February 22, 2004, 02:16:24 pm »

Our current Treasurer, Mose Hastings, is unable to continue in the position because of his business travel schedule, which takes him out of the country for weeks at a time.  Accordingly, we're looking for applicants for the Treasurer position.  It will involve processing payments to and from the FSP and maintaining good records, including a brief monthly financial statement for the Quill.  Mose has agreed to continue handling tax preparation and auditing, and Amanda Phillips, our new President, will also be able to help you get situated.  Part of the job will involve maintaining communication with the Merchandise Coordinator, Trevor Snyder, to make sure people who buy and donate receive the stuff they need, and to make sure we're well stocked on the things we send out.

The main perk of the position is that we will offer you free high-speed Internet access (cable or DSL).  It's a perk, but it's also something you'll likely need, to send large files quickly and reliably.  We're looking for anyone who is dedicated to the FSP and is a conscientious person, preferably with some nonprofit accounting experience.  You don't have to be a CPA.

Email me at jsorens@freestateproject.org with your resume if you'd like to fulfill this important responsibility!

She was overwhelmed and a little burnt out, so she stepped down as Treasurer in October.  She's still our Resident Agent in Nevada.  She was actually doing quite a bit more than we would expect our Treasurer to do nowadays.

So you say you want a revolution?

So you say you want a revolution?

Are you willing to work for Liberty in our Lifetime?

The Free State Project has asked me to recruit a few good individuals
for an important task: Fundraising!

If you can dial a phone and ask people for money for one of the
greatest causes in our lifetime - the Free State Project, we need
you.

If you can send out email messages to your friends, comrades, allies,
and family (who are sometimes all of the above :-), we need you.

If you have good communication skills, good written skills, a good
personality, and an ability to make and meet commitments, we need
you!

Fundraising, finance, and public speaking skills are NOT required, so
don't worry about that. But if you DO have Fundraising experience,
we DEFINATELY want to talk with you.

This opportunity will reward you with:

- access to like-minded people who, like you, seek to bring us
closer to liberty's sweet promise.

- experience in fundraising, and training will be provided on how
to ask people nicely for money while maintaining your integrity
and sense of humor. This alone is a "life skill" that can be
very useful in, say, persuading a bank, or a venture capitalist,
to loan you money for a new business enterprise!

- exposure to the rest of the Free State Project as someone who is
more than a "talker", but rather is someone who is a "do-er."
This can lead to other opportunities and open doors. We promise
to give you praise and notice (if YOU want it -- if not, no
worries, you can stay in the background if that is your desire).

- access to discounted FSP merchandise.

We are forming The Shock Troops of the Revolution, and helping to
lead the charge is Fundraising.

We are searching for both Leaders, and Participants - so don't worry
if you only have a few hours a week to donate. If you want to take a
leadership role, we the position of Director of Development position
open!

Now is the time to galvinize the FSP to reach The Next Level. Won't
you join me in this, the great adventure of our lives?

If you are interested, please send your resume, curricula vitae,
biography, and/or background information to:

The Management team of the FSP has put together an Executive Search Team (which I head up).

If you're interested in applying, we ask that you send me your resume, curricula vitae, biography, or any other materials.   The Executive Search Team is comprised of Keith Murphy (Regional Coordinator), Varrin Swearingen (FSP Director), Seth Atwood (Publicity), Amanda Phillips (FSP President), and myself (Alan R. Weiss, FSP Member).

Your materials and the fact that you inquired will remain confidential, and known only to the Executive Search Team and and the Officers of the FSP.

The Director of Development will be responsible for leading the Fundraising ("Ways and Means") efforts of the Free State Project.   Duties will include at least the following:

- Establishing the Fundraising Goals and Objectives, and establishing a budget for this effort.
- Managing and Leading the Annual Fundraising Drive.
- Recruiting and organizing volunteers to staff the Annual Fundraising Drive.
- Working with the Regional Coordinator (Keith Murphy) to utilize the regional and local resources.
- Working with the FSP Treasurer (Karen Pratt) so that funds are secured (Karen will do the bulk of this work, but you'll coordinate and track receipts).
- Working with the FSP President, keeping her appraised of status, progress, and plans.

There may be other duties and assignments, but those are the basic duties.  As you can see, the main project is the Annual Fundraising Drive.  Amanda and the Executive Search Team has started a basic schedule, but we would expect that the Director of Development have input and provide guidance - its not for us to dictate a schedule!  :-)

We believe that this is a KEY position in the Free State Project, and the rewards can be profound.  We believe that it could take 20 hours a week, but with good organizational and delegational skills, it could actually be done in less time per week.

Qualities we're looking for:

- Dedication to the Goals and Objectives of Fundraising while maintaining high ethical standards
- Personal integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness
- Excellent communication and "people" skills
- Experience in fundraising
- The ability to treat volunteers with respect and yet gently manage their efforts, leading them to success and enriching their experience
- The ability to work on a team, report status, and display dedication and energy
- Of course, adherance to the philosophy of the Free State Project and the ability to articulate its Mission and Goals
- A knowledge of basic accounting is helpful, but NOT a requirement (we have a Treasurer that can do that, and Amanda herself is an Accountant).

If you don't think you have all or most of the requirements, if the time commitment is more than you anticipated, or if you have any other reason why the Director of Development position might not be do-able for you at this time - WE STILL WANT YOU!  We need volunteers, and as you can see we're building a team spirit that will be fun and productive.

Again, thank you for your inquiry.  I hope I've explained the basics, and if you're still interested, please send your materials in complete confidence.

Most Sincerely,

Alan R. Weiss, for
