More bad luck for Ky. Free Stater

BEVERLEY WANG

Associated Press

LANCASTER, N.H. - Fate has not been kind to Randall Wolfe.

Wolfe, the 20-year-old Corbin, Ky., man who planned to walk 1,000 miles to join the Free State Project's 'Porcupine Freedom Festival,' injured his foot and then was robbed at a campsite 350 miles into his journey. So he took his car.

Friday night, Wolfe totaled his purple Neon when he hit a moose as he made his way through Lancaster, the site of the festival.

"It was so tall that we couldn't see it until it was an inch away," Wolfe said. "My windshield is now touching my steering wheel."

Bits of moose hair stick out of Wolfe's smashed windshield. The spray-painted hood is crumpled. So is the vehicle's roof, which looks like it was smashed by a falling tree.

"God hates me," said Wolfe, pausing to take a drag from a cigarette. "I've been on my own since I've been 17 and every last minute of it's been hell."

Wolfe is now homeless. He forgot his tent in Kentucky and planned to stay in his car, but that is impossible now. He said he can't go back to Kentucky for legal reasons. He also lost his job as a Taco Bell manager-trainee when his bosses read about his Free State plans in an Associated Press report, which said Wolfe wants to decriminalize marijuana.

"I got some change and that's all I got," he said.

Wolfe said the vehicle is insured under his grandmother's name and he hasn't been able to get in touch with her. He has no money and can't afford to buy more time credits for his cellular phone.

"First I put a hole in my foot, then I put a hole in my car," he said.

Wolfe left Kentucky May 23, intending to arrive in New Hampshire in time for the Porcupine Festival. He hurt his foot in West Virginia in early June. In excruciating pain, he said he walked and crawled along the side of the freeway until he reached a rest stop.

"I passed out on a bench with my stuff lying next to me. I woke up and my stuff was gone," he said. A friend came and drove him home, he said.

All this trouble has Wolfe wondering if the Free State Project is worth it, but he still intends to move to New Hampshire eventually.

"No matter what, I will be eventually living in this state, but right now, it's not meant to be," Wolfe said.

He brightened briefly as he recalled arriving in New Hampshire, which may become home to thousands of libertarians in the Free State Project within the next few years.

"I definitely felt a lot freer as soon as I crossed that border."

I think Randall's making sure the movie made one day about the FSP will have some comic elements to it.

Randall needs a job and a roomie so he doesnt have to leave NH for the time being...might as well make the move now and avoid future travelling (accidents)

Thanks for everything, Randall.

I think that we might want to send Randall into the socialist movements so he can bring them some bad luck.

All joking aside, you have to admire Randall's persistance and dedication to the FSP. In spite of all of his bad luck, he has the nicest attitude.

Randall... THANKS for everything.

You're going to be a battle hardened veteran of the FSP :)

Kind of like Paul Revere's ride but with a moose and thief added in.  I do appreciate your work though.  My hat's off to you, Randall.

I personally believe that the moose sacrificed himself for the greater good of the group to stop selfish individuals like Randall from coming to NH to enslave the homeless and eat babies. [/sarcasm]  :P

LOL, well anyways...Randall, all I can say is you rock, and I wish you the best; and it definitely will be worth it all in the end.

I believe there is now a rumor going around that this moose was a member of the Million Moose March... and it sacrificed itself to demonstrate against the Free Staters who are hunting them... (http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Hunting/Moose_hunt/2004_Moose_Winners.htm)   What? Those aren't Free Staters?  Those are New Hampshire natives, with licenses and guns??  Oh...  never mind.  It MUST be the Free Staters' fault, somehow.  ;D

Kind of like Paul Revere's ride but with a moose and thief added in.

Gawd! I almost spit out my drink when I read that!

That is one of the funniest things I have read in a long time, Steve!.

But I met Randall this weekend, AND saw a (digtal) picture of the car. There is NO WAY anyone should have been able to survive that. The car looks like a V from the front.

The way I figure it, with the Christian, Atheist and other gatherings scheduled for Sunday morning, we had our bases covered.  ;)

RANDALL ROCKS!!!!!!

Please tell me that is an over-simplified version of the real story, or Randall Wolfe is going to have a nice change in fortune with a potential settlement with his former employer.
I know, because I spent days in a university law library during one of my business law classes researching legal cases where people were fired for their political beliefs,  and the employer lost everytime.  Granted, most every case I read dealt with Communist Party members who lost their jobs, still, it remains plain illegal to fire employees over political beliefs, period.
And whether or not we agree that government has any right to meddle in the right of employers to choose whom they may hire, allowing the rare blessings of bad laws to restore good law is justified.

Though, not sure Randall really does have much of a case:

He should settle out of court with them for three mixed burritos, Three large drinks, and two fries a day, to be picked up at any New Hampshire Taco Bell. :)

Oh yeah, and a new car. ;)

The moose was a proud member of Teddy Roosevelt's Bull-Moose Party, this year however, quite literally running as a fusion candidate: Bull-Moose-Dodge-Neon.

Sorry JM.  :-[ Last year I promised you I wouldn't hit any moose if we chose NH, if you wouldn't hit any elk if we chose WY. Although technically it was Randall. :)
I wonder when the first political cartoon will come out with a porcupine cutting the legs out from under a moose.

Not a problem  ;)....

It would have been great to use the moose for moose meat BBQ for the gathering... 500 pounds of meat on average. :)

BTW - I know we raised a tent and sleeping bag for him, but you notice the reporters didn't talk about that... ;)

Randall is currently in Dover...I think?? ???  He is with a friend.  I expect to be hearing from him in the next couple of days.  Special thanks to the Athiest folks who passed the hat Sunday morning and gave me a couple bucks to pass on to him!

Believe Randall hopes to stay in NH if he can find a job. :D

Will try and keep you updated.

Not to be out done, it seems the Christian meeting resulted in Randy (FL) hooking up and will be getting a ride to Indiana to his brothers house.  Right now he is touring NH with a fellow porc.

Randy expects to get a job, save up some cash and give NH another shot!

Know to my way of thinking....actions speak louder than words and.....well....
Nuff said! ;)

This just in!!!!

Concord, NH - - - Kathy Sullivan, the New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairwoman, after hearing of a vacationer of NH being hit by a Moose, proposes a new set of laws against Moose entering and standing on public roads.  "The citizens of New Hampshire are tired of these immigrants from the North coming into the state and using our roads without paying their fair share of taxes."

To combat the Moose problem, Kathy suggests that State of New Hampshire impose a state wide income tax to pay for the new "Ministry against Moose, but for Mousse."  Kathy in a selfless act, graciously agreed to head the new Ministry and staff it with her friends and coffers, who care about the citizens of their great state.  The new Ministry will help construct billboards and create television spots to help advertise to the entire Moose population that they should not "Hang out" on streets and to "Stay in School".

The Ministry also has agreed to test all mousses made in New Hampshire, and to make sure they are suitably edible for the delicate palettes of the citizens of New Hampshire.

Kathy wishes to emphasize that Moose are not to blame for their uncivilized behaviour, having been the victims of their environment. She proposes the State take parental control of ALL Moose under the age of eighteen, and having them undergo sensitivity training in the local schools.

I felt really bad for both these guys! I wish  someone out there could help both of them through this temporary time of need with at least a place to crash until they find jobs and places to live, etc.

I think they've both put a lot on the line to come to NH for the FSP. What can  we do for them?

Woah, I didn't see this thread untill after I had made the one on the porc fest forum. Feel free to merge it into this one. As for the guy asking about Taco Bell... It is an over simplified version. I didn't really get fired, they just told me that they wouldn't promote me so I quit. The reason they wouldn't promote me was because it had said I was convicted of drug charges twice. They wouldn't take my word for it that none of that is on my record (which it isn't I checked myself) So I guess they fired me without firing me, they will easily get away with it because of the way they worded things when talking to me

No, they don't, but they won't promote you if you have a drug charge on your record. As I said, I told them that there was nothing on my record, but they refused to do my background check after reading that.

How ironic that Taco Bell, one of the fast food establishments on the top of many stoner's munchies list would have this policy.  And that's not saying anything about the marijuana consumption habits of their employees.  I'd be willing to bet pot smokers number over 50% of the workers in any given Taco Bell.  And that's a VERY conservative number.  What do you say, Randall?  How many of your co-workers smoked pot?

Ian

Every single one of them except for the RGM actualy. I've worked in 5 or so stores in TN and KY and and at least 90% of the employees are stoners. I've been working fast food since I was 15, so I can safely say that this is true with most fast food, but Taco Bell attracts stoners MUCH more than other places for some reason.

Heh.  I was going to say 90%, but I thought things might be different in Kentucky, so I went with 50%.  And I know this without even ever having worked there!  I would say most restaurants / fast food places average 75-80% of their staff being potheads.  :)

High level management, if they aren't potheads, are usually on coke.

It's interesting.

Ian, I had never seen a moose before the PorcFest, but I saw two while I was in NH.

Moose are tall, and have somewhat spindly legs compared to relative mass of their bodies.  Perhaps the hood and front of the car escaped significant damage because it slid under the moose, while the body crashed into the windshield.  Maybe someone more familiar with moose will enlighten us.
