Title: Who Here Has Gotten Their Ballots already?
Post by: Blain on July 31, 2003, 10:08:17 pm
It's been a week and I'm still waiting on mine.

Feel free to post when you get yours and tell us about it!  Feel free to tell us which state you voted for too if you wish.   ;)

There was an update on the main page that said the ballots were delayed until the 30th of July.

Right.  The ballots started going out on the 30th, and they're being mailed third-class, apparently, so it could take a bit of time.   :-\

How long does third class mailing typically take?

The term third class mail is actually an obsolete term. Its been replaced by Standard Mail A&B. Standard mail generally takes between 2-9 days depending on the distance to travel.

I 'm just hoping Elizabeth didn't mean Bulk Mail which takes upwards of 3-4 weeks.  ;D

I knew about bulk mail, which is why I was wondering if this third class thing was the same.

Thanks for setting me straight...although yes, hopefully she didn't mean bulk

Alright...judging from the newest annoucement, which stated that it could take two weeks, is this really bulk mail?

No, not bulk mail.

At what point should one inquire ... if their ballot(s) have not arrived? Nobody wants to miss the vote.

Has anybody seen A Christmas Story when the kid is awaiting the delivery of his Li'l Orphan Annie Decoder Ring? Yep, that's me right now. My mailbox needs a little WD-40.  :-[

My wife got something in the mail from Texas yesterday and had me doing postmark calculations.

Hi,
My business won the bid to print and mail the ballots - they (at least 85%) went out on Friday, the 29th of July - there were various database issues, formatting & layout issues, and time issues to deal with.  The balance will be mailed as soon as the addresses are corrected.  The ballots were mailed 'standard mail' which means that it could take up to 2 weeks (the post office does not guarantee ANY time frame BTW) for interstate travel and delivery.  I am as anxious as you all to vote and find out which state is picked, but, I hope you all agree that timeliness is less important than to make sure that everyone receives their ballot and is able to vote.  Throughout this mailing I have had tremendous time presures, but, I think that 'doing it right' and making sure that each and every person recieves a ballot is more important.  In a mailing of this size it is easy for a print/mail house to misplace, mis-stuff (wrong ballot in differently addressed envelopes, etc), etc because there is so much labor involved, which means humans, which means imperfections - to help combat this we took extra time to quality control the labour process.  Rest assured your ballots are on their way.  If you have not received your ballot by the 15th, then please let the FSP know.  Although we have done as much as was possible to insure delivery to you, it is in the post office's hands and out of our control, I foresee a possible .5-1% loss of delivery (25-50 ballots lost) through the post office and we are ready to reprint and mail out First class those that did not make it through the government's postal system.  Above all, I suggest we all relax a bit and don't fret - Jason and crew have done admirably and we will all get our ballots one way or another.  This is a truly historic moment.... just amazing - I can't believe all the various people(other clients, friends) that have asked questions and become interested in the FSP just because they have seen the furious printing of these ballots and state reports consuming my company.  If this is any indication, I really think that the sign-up rate will reach that 'point of critical mass' soon after the vote and the media blitz associated with it...

Freedom is in the mail,
michael

I think that I am going to go buy you a calendar. ???
Title: Re:Who Here Has Gotten Their Ballots already?
Post by: LeopardPM on August 06, 2003, 11:34:54 am
LOL - I assume you mean that the 29th of July is on a weekend in which case I propably glanced over and read an August calendar by mistake - I mean that they were sent out by last Friday (6 days ago) - NOTE: the US post office does not include sundays in its extimate of two weeks...

If you are insinuating that I need a calendar because of the supposed 'lateness' of the mailing, I strongly disagree - a customer who arbitrarily sets deadlines which I have not seen or agreed to or allows time for potential problems or refinements of the printed piece/database is not in a position to then say that we have not held up our side of the contract in regards to the actual mailing date.  We have worked extremely hard on this project and were forced to totally restructure our work flow because of the supposed deadline.  This 'cost' is usually passed on to the customer in the form of 'rush' fees, which I try to avoid and I just 'suck' up the costs, sometimes taking it in the shorts to provide the service my clients desire.  This isn't exactly a good business practice and ultimately is an obstacle to the amount of 'success' my business might otherwise experience - BUT, it is in line with my personality and how I personally treat others and am willing to receive less profit to adhere to my own principles etc...  I believe in the value of service, perhaps more than the market does...

michael

PS: I have found that my business practices have garnered me a very loyal customer base, albeit slightly smaller than I might hope.  I would rather restrict my market to deal only with those who really appreciate my efforts.  I am excited about the upcoming 'Ladies in Liberty' calendars which it looks like I will be producing for Rachel Mills, this product will more accurately reflect the quality and type of business I enjoy to do.

Bingo. Wrong month. Last Friday was August 1, the apparent date of mailing. August 29 is the last Friday in August.

Leonard Pm,

I have some innocent questions.  Like, what's the big deal?

Why didn't the FSP buy some pizzas for some folk, stuff the mailing of the ballots, and be done with it?

A bid?  For a mailing which they "thought" was first class which now, it seems, is "no class".

What's the big deal?  Hey, I don't know your business, but some people want their ballots.  That's the purpose of this thing.  I think the honchos of the FSP really outmaneuvered themselves on this one.  May be that one or more needs a lesson in the real world. Try Round Table next time.  It'll save the heartache.

As for me, thanks for posting what you did, I can wait.  And I appreciate what I am sure you went through dealing with some unappreciative customers.  It's just that 5,000 (fewer, actually) ballots ain't that big a deal.

The problem with any sort of slippage on vote dates is that we are now getting a lot of press, especially local press in the 10 candidate states.  They're going to be waiting for the votes to be counted.  So far I've heard people say in interviews that we'd have a state chosen by August 15th or September 1st.  Those dates are when these news outlets are going to expect a chosen state.  If we can't provide one by around then, we'll start to lose credibility.
Title: Re:Who Here Has Gotten Their Ballots already?
Post by: Elizabeth on August 09, 2003, 12:58:43 pm
The official dates are last ballots due by 9/22, announcement 10/1.

[grumpy rant]

As for the person who recommended stuffing envelopes, where were you when we were begging for volunteers for the million tasks we need done?  Almost every time we've relied on a volunteer for a task, they've bailed on us.  There are exceptions, of course, like Eddie and the Houston Group, the newsletter volunteers, and a few others.  But recently we asked people to help answer calls to the 800 number.  Two people committed and then bailed at the last minute -- only the third one followed through.  Ditto with getting help putting brochures into the mail for people who request info -- we went through a couple iterations of people who promised to help and then at the last minute pulled out before someone finally followed through.

The ballots were too important to trust to volunteers -- volunteers necessarily think that they can bail if they don't feel like meeting their commitment, since they're not getting paid.

Also, the ballots were complicated, including several pieces needing to be printed and assembled, not to mention the confidential mailing list.  So it was better to go with a printer, esp. one who was a member.

Now, as for the specifics:  I was not involved with the ballot process.  I should have been, because I think I'm the only one on the Board with any experience in project management and dealing with printer deadlines.  But I was moving at the time this all went down, and I wasn't on the ballot committee to begin with.  Thus, Jason and the rest of the committee -- who volunteer hours and hours of time every week, for years, now -- made some mis-estimations on turnaround time, etc.  That's not unexpected, given the lack of experience on this kind of thing.  They didn't think to ask if it was first class mail or not -- foolish mistake, but a perfectly reasonable one.  Also, to be honest, Mike let some deadlines slip as well.  So both sides mis-estimated.

DA, you need to quit bitching and expecting us to be perfect.  Jason has tanked his chances at a career because of the FSP.  I've had employment problems myself, and could cause them for my husband if his employer knew.  Another Board member has been arrested handing out FSP literature.  We are all super-committed, and happy to be involved, but we're not perfect and we do make mistakes, especially when we're so burned out without people to help us take over basic tasks.  Hindsight is 20/20.  If you think you can do it better, feel free to pitch in.

[/end grumpy rant]

Elizabeth the Board Member,

If it was you who posted that message calling for volunteers, I posted a response offering to do the calling and specifically mentioning that I did not need reimbursement for the calls---I posted that to the email address of whatever board member asked for volunteers; that person (you) never responded.

How old are you?  Eight?

Elizabeth the Board Member,

And, if you need a repost of the mailing address (in Denver) and phone number, I'll do that.  I make a living (and have for more than 24 years) doing campaigns.  I noticed that more than one "twit" had posted a response taking you to task for the way you asked for help. Bemused, I offered my own help.

I am very experienced with 'volunteers' doing nothing (many, many campaigns ago I developed the sense that volunteers almost NEVER accomplish anything, except the drain on my pizza account----except, I've noticed that if the pizza and venue---usually my place or motel is good enough, a whole lot of volunteers can do the job of a few paid people, if the job is simple enough).  That fact is my bread and butter---see, real campaigns need real people.

It was out of respect for the concept of the FSP that I graciously offered to do what I do for you for nothing---in your stead.  Really, you can contact me if you want help...But, act like an adult.

Elizabeth,
Yes, I agree with you as to the 'reasons' behind the tardiness and I will assume some responsibility in that delay - this whole process could have been accomplished in a much better fashion - BUT - considering that you and Jason and all others are volunteers and (jason) has not apparently had the pleasure, or displeasure of dealing with the real-world problems that can crop up easily in a project of this size, I think we have pulled this off pretty well.  I am still grumbling about some aspects (this has changed from one mailing to: one major mailing with some additional follow-ups as more members sign on) but will capitulate and do my best to satiate your desires (not yours personally, the FSP Board... LOL).

I am glad that you are more realistic in your expectations - makes me feel that some of the herculean efforts and costs I incurred were not in vain.

a happy FSPer,
michael

Oh, then everything is fine, I probably just heard the dates wrong.  I was just warning in case we start to justify slippage, as a few people mentioned above.

Dearest John,
Due to the violent attempts at trying to persuade poor Leopard from believing his silly, unrealistic concepts of the monetary system and how it should be altered - we have purposely delayed your ballot from being mailed.  We hope you will treat Mr. Leopard with more respect in the future because even worse things could 'accidently' happen...

Peoples Republic of Postal Delivery Systems

BTW: just a joke - I really don't know a thing about individual ballots and such and would never interfere with a client's private information in such a way... I only make sure an address is correct and deliverable then mail it... from there, its outta me hands!

Dont fret everyone... if you haven't gotten a ballot by monday - then I (me and only me), may (as in 'is allowed to') be worried...

they are coming, soon than Christmas and will be in your eager hands when the post offices deems.  Perhaps in the free state we can dismantle the postal system and go private?  THEN we will get some service!  (although, I must say, I all my mailings/dealings with the post office, they have been very helpful and expedient)

You should not be concerned.  Most of the first batch have not been received yet.

If you haven't received them by the end of August, then you should get in touch.   But you have until 9/22 for them to be received by ECL, so there's still PLENTY of time.

North Carolina - still no ballot.   :'(

If it takes until the end of August (30 days after mailing) to crawl this far east, how long will it take to flow back west to the official counters?

I hope it doesn't miss the voting deadline ???

My faith will no doubt sustain me  .  .  . I'm still waiting for a grade-school paper my teacher said she mailed back after term-end.  Of course, that was 40 years and few changes-of-address ago .  .  .

If you mail it back, you'll probably send it first class, so it should get back much faster.

to all those who have not yet recieved their ballots - I understand that this delivery is approaching the outside limits that the post office claims to be 'acceptable' - Tim and I are aware of this and will take whatever steps are necessary if a problem does show itself - until that point in time, there is NO problem yet - I urge you not to overload poor Tim, or any other board member, with the fact that you haven't recieved your ballot - there is nothing that can be done right now UNTIL after a certain date has passed that they determine, and once (I doubt it will come to this) a problem has been detected - They will let everyone know and specifically ask whether or not a ballot has been received.  Until that time, please do not vent your frustration on them... all you accomplish is causing them stress (which gets transferred directly to me - ;-)  )...  relax, get your favorite beverage and, know that all is well in the world....

Also Very Excited about the Vote,
michael

Still waiting on mine. However, my wife who signed up on August 2nd got her ballot earlier this week. Great news for her but it has caused me to grow sadder each time that I check the mail.

Patrick,
The decision to have one spouse in a family unit receive their ballot significantly earlier than the other was madde in an all out effort to provide a jealous wedge between spouses.  I see that the plan has the possiblity to be successful...

Here's a tip to slightly increase the lifetime of your mailbox. It's a little-known fact, but once you get some mail, you won't get any more mail until the next day (or two days away if it's Saturday). That way, if you check your mailbox and there are a bunch of bills and other non-ballot junk, you can give your mailbox's hinges a rest until the next morning.

;D

Elizabeth the Board Member,

If it was you who posted that message calling for volunteers, I posted a response offering to do the calling and specifically mentioning that I did not need reimbursement for the calls---I posted that to the email address of whatever board member asked for volunteers; that person (you) never responded.

How old are you?  Eight?

That was not my post.

http://forum.freestateproject.org/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=2213

Obviously, at least I'm old enough to read.  You?  :P

Elizabeth,

I responded to a volunteer request in July from Debra, and I never heard from her, either. I realize there weren't many volunteers who responded in the thread, but there you have it. I would have been happy to help, but no one answered me.

No big deal, but I am worried about getting my ballot in time.

Are we committing a postal crime of some sort? I don't need the Postmaster General knocking on my door with my mailbox under his arm for mail-box abuse. It would become a ward of the state. What a sad ending that would be for it.

Third class? You've got to be kidding.According to Debra in the Quill the members sent in $13,000 for the vote.I personally contributed $50.The vote count is being donated,so you cant claim that as an expense.WHERE DID THE MONEY GO?
Title: Re:Who Here Has Gotten Their Ballots already?

I am sure that the Ballot cost will be presented in the next Quill Issue or something - I don't have a problem releasing the price but feel it is up to the FSP to do so - I can say that it is far less than $13,000 and that my bid was at least 15% less than the competition (as far as I know) - they did get multiple bids...

If the FSP ever mass mails again, it would be nice to allow members to upgrade their mailing status with a simple donation of the appropriate funds.  1st class would have gotten them here in about 3 days.

Monday, 8/18 Sarasota, FL :  I've got nuthin'.

I believe this was due to simple inexperience of those obtaining the printing/mailing quotes... I think they didn't understand it was going out Standard Mail.  But I could be wrong.  Definitely a lesson well-learned.  :-\

I believe the decision to go Standard (bulk) mail was made before to great paypal incident and the funds were limited... after the influx of donations AND the return of paypals theft, the FSP was awash in funds (kinda) but the mailing was already in process.  This is my guess and really do not know the intricate workings of the Board....

I believe I was clear as to the cheapest way to both print and mail these ballots, including what 'standard' mail was and approx. length of time...

I would have to check back at the email log to say for sure...

Well, use Acrobat.  (Not Acrobat Reader, the real thing.)
If you want the text to show as Text rather than as images of Text, then you put it through an OCR program first.
I can do it for you if you send me a high-resolution scan (NOT JPG).  That would be too big for E-Mail, but you can send a CD or put it on a web site.

In reply to the PDF problem:

there are multiple ways, the first doesn't cost money:

Go to this Adobe link:
https://createpdf.adobe.com/index.pl/3856571569.05205?BP=IE&v=AHP (https://createpdf.adobe.com/index.pl/3856571569.05205?BP=IE&v=AHP)

at the bottom of the page it allows you to sign up (free) and create 5 pdfs for free

the other solution is for the FSP to create an Acrobat Form from the PDF which could be sent out to people and filled out then sent back - don't know if anyone has experience using these forms - it works well - but I am unsure about getting the signature into it...

I suggest the first course of action

All ok, I presume?  Typhoon is Pacific for hurricane, right?

Yes, everything's ok here, and you got the hurricane bit right. 110mph winds that day. Had a shed blown away, and power out for 6 hours... but other than that, no problem...

I just only check the forum weekly or so.

And how'd I get negative karma already??? Somebody not like me?  :-\

And being on subject - just got my ballot today (21 August here), so it would seem like everybody with a United States address should have gotten theirs before now.... of course, things happen, and they lost the "state" on my address... (just says "FPO, 963xx-xxxx" - still got to me, however) so who knows?

That and being where I am, they probably dumped it on an airplane once it crawled to California...

(keep needing to edit, there's always something more to be said...)

OK, just got approval from Jason...

Anyone who wants to make sure that their address etc is correct or wants to know which mailing (there have been three seperate mailings fo far and will be one more 'final' mailing to include all those people who signed up from Aug 1st to the 15th) their ballot was mailed in....

here is the deal:
IF YOU HAVEN'T RECEIVED A BALLOT BY THIS SATURDAY, then let me know...

Email me at : leopardpm@yahoo.com

Make the subject line say: NO BALLOT
put your name and current address in the body of the email

I will check your name against the membership database and determine if there is a problem or not - if your address is incorrect in the database, then I will update it and put you on a list of people who need to be re-mailed.  It will probably take a few days for me to email you back, especially if I get flooded with emails.

I am hoping that most people have received their ballots and that I will not be flooded here with 5000 emails because my yahoo mail account will explode...

I am trying to get a jump on any possible problem while we still have PLENTY of time to fix it... not saying there is a problem, just making sure..

Yikes!  That probably means that at least two other people also have wrong names on their ballots.  OK, let's do this: E-mail me with your correct names, I will notify ECL, and you can cross out the wrong names on the ballot and write in your correct names.  Next to the written-in correct names, write a note like "per communication with Jason & ECL."  ECL will then count the ballots as normal when they arrive and use your correct names to match to your authentication.

We (Jason & I) just discovered yesterday that a group of about 200 had bad addresses (not verifiable by the USPS Address Verification System) and needed to be fixed.  This will be sent out with the last official batch of people who signed up in August - Mailed out first class on Monday (if all goes well this weekend...lol)

so a few of you all may not have even be mailed yet... don't frett - like I said b4, if you haven't received ballot by saturday - email me at the address in the manner I described in the above post and we will fix things...

WOMAN BITES POSTAL WORKER

Postal carrier Roshan Washington was assaulted on Saturday afternoon while delivering mail in downtown Oakland.  Mr. Washington, now listed in good condition at Kaiser Oakland, describes his ordeal as follows:  "It was the strangest thing.  This lady walked into the lobby while I was locking up the boxes after delivering the mail.  She opened up her mailbox and quickly shuffled through her mail.  Next thing I know, she's screaming at the top of her lungs, foaming at the mouth, and beating her head, hard, against the mailboxes.  I didn't know what was happening; I thought maybe she was having a seizure.  Then the <expletive> lunges at me and sinks her teeth into my calf!!  I was spinning around and around and she was hanging on like a pitbull.  Fortunately, another tenant came into the lobby at that point and kept kicking her until she let go of my leg."

The suspect, a Ms. F. Jones, is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to undergo a mental competency examination prior to the preliminary hearing.  Her court-appointed attorney, Hamilton Wu, was quoted as saying "My client is clearly a very sick woman and deserves our compassion.  I'm going to urge the judge to rule for heavy medication rather than incarceration.

Homeowners' association president Madeleine Van Arpels expressed shock and dismay over this incident.  "It's just so bizarre.  She's lived here for 5 years and seemed like such a sweet, quiet girl.  First the carjacking in the garage two weeks ago, and now this?  I just don't know what's happening to this country!"

Ms. Jones, who was unavailable for comment, has no prior criminal record and no known history of mental illness.  Mr. Washington noted that, immediately prior to the attack, she screamed something about a "ballot".  U.C. Berkeley political pundit Bruce Cain, upon hearing of the incident, noted, "This whole recall thing is putting a lot of stress on all of us.  I understand this Ms. Jones is a Cal grad, so it's safe to assume she's either a Democrat or a Green;  perhaps the whole Schwarzennegger thing was just more than she could bear. Frankly, I think we'll be seeing more of this sort of incident in the weeks ahead."

"I don't know, man", Mr. Washington is reported as saying.  "She was screaming about wanting her ballot, and 'North to Alaska', and some other crazy <expletive>.  There's just too many crazies in this town."  Mr. Washington is currently undergoing a series of rabies shots and will be on medical leave for several weeks due to the severity of the damage to his leg.

I did kind of snap at the mailman. We spent last week in beautiful Nova Scotia, enjoying our fantasy of a ballot waiting to be delivered with the rest of our held mail. When the mailman came to the door with my stack, I could see there was no ballot.

I shouldn't have barked, "This CAN'T be all of it!"

ROFLMFAO!  judging from the discontent expressed in this thread, I do fear for the lives of a variety of postal workers across the nation - I am greatly regretting my decision in influencing Jason to 'save money' in this mailing - I did not forsee the impatience of the membership causing such stress among the Board Members... we could have done things 'better' in two ways that I see: (1) Not announce to the membership when the ballots went out and the EXPECTED arrival date thereof, (2) mailed everything roughly the twice as expensive route of first class...

I do hope that the money saved will have an effect after the vote is done in that the FSP will have more money to spend in promoting the state announcement and other publicity - this was my reasoning for promoting 'doing it on the cheap' - we used the least expensive form of printing & mailing in an effort to conserve funds to spend on the promoting of the FSP to the media and public at large....

though this whole process will definitely have a backlash effect on the memberships perception (and probably the Boards perception) of me and my business,  I think that the choices made will end up proving to be a net positive for the FSP at the expence of a possible negative on me personaly.  I can take it, and I stand by what has happened including the 'inconveniences' that members are experiencing in the delayed receipt of their ballot...

at your mercy,
michael
the one responsibile for influencing the decision to deliver the ballots in this ixcrutiatingly slow manner...

New definition - going postal  The reaction of a disappointed and angered Free Stater to their mailman when they discover their mailman didn’t bring their ballot.

Some are talking openly of shooting the slow burro.

at this point, I fear that the post office decided against using their speedy burros and elected instead to deliver by slug - in an effort to cut rising costs of course...
