Why do we even bother to have state constitutions???

Nevada court paves way for new taxes
    Las Vegas Review Journal

"In a stunning decision Thursday, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled 6-1
that the Legislature needs only a simple majority to pass record tax
increases to balance the state budget and fund education. The
decision sets aside the state constitutional amendment requiring at
least two-thirds support of lawmakers to pass tax increases. The
justices ruled that the need to fund public schools, another
constitutional requirement, took precedence over the need to approve
tax increases by a two-thirds supermajority." (07/11/03)

For that matter, why do we bother with the federal constitution?  I think much of the problem stems from the fact that many feel they are "living documents" and the meaning changes as time changes.  As far as I am concerned, constitutions mean what they say, and there is actually very little room for interpretation.  That being said, this seems to be just another way to circumvent the letter of the law for the "good of the children"  Blah  :'(

To me their job was to define 2/3....as in 2/3 of 13 = 8.667 therefore you round up to 9,  not say 2/3 = 50.01%....

Now that I have had  a chance to cool off......

And I guess I should ask this in the "which state" file, but.....

Which FSP state has the easiest or if there is any way to recall state SC justices?

A petition with 20K + names on it to recall some to these stupid (actually insert appropriate stream of cuss words) judges, maybe they would try to up hold the state constitutions!!!!!  If not....let them find work as street cleaners (sorry street cleaners just a rant) !!!

The latest!!

A federal lawsuit has been filed putting everything on hold. This is becoming a very interesting story.

That's what happens when you give the courts a choice between two constitutional amendments; they choose the one that screws the individual.

Nevada needs to cut its budget - gambling tax revenues are smaller than sales tax revenues, and that means the state government is going to get bigger than it needs to be.

I believe the recent influx of retiring Californians has had a negative impact on state politics, and I believe that liberty lovers - like myself - are giving up without a fight. It's good to see the lawsuit, though.
