http://www.centralmaine.com/news/stories/021103hunter_f.shtmlPORTLAND — The lawyer for a Canadian man arrested while getting gasoline in Maine hopes a longstanding agreement between the gasoline station and U.S. Customs could help his client beat charges that he entered the country illegally. Michel Jalbert, 32, was arrested three weeks ago while filling up at the Gazbar gas station, which is just across the border in Estcourt, Maine, after he had been bird hunting. He was charged with being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's Office will present the case to a federal grand jury in Portland next week in an effort to get a federal indictment. The station is located on the Maine side of the international border, thereby escaping the high gasoline taxes charged in Canada. But the U.S. Customs station, where people entering the country are inspected to make sure they can legally come to the United States, is located a mile down the road. His lawyer, Jon Haddow, on Friday released a 1990 letter from the then-district director for U.S. Customs that says that customers of the gasoline station where Jalbert was arrested are exempt from the requirement to submit to customs inspections.

Well, it's nice to see that we have our priorities in the right place: busting the nefarious Canadian bird-hunters who lurk among us and buy up our gasoline.
