Any geeky Porcupines planning on attending LinuxWorld? If so, you could hand out some FSP fliers, or plant some stickers sereptitiously around Moscone Center. If nobody's attending, it might be worthwhile for someone to pass out fliers by the door in the morning. Please let me know if you're available to do that. Thanks! EVENT FACTS: =============== LinuxWorld Conference & Expo The Moscone Center West, San Francisco, CA August 8 - 11, 2005 (Expo: August 9 - 11, 2005) TO REGISTER: ============= Register online by July 8, 2005 with PRIORITY CODE: B0303 to receive your complimentary Exhibit Hall pass and to save with Early Bird Pricing on the conference package of your choice. http://or10.net/r/?ZXU=169607&ZXD=549936

They are still debating if we are going to have a booth... but they might send one or two people... I might be able to cry FSP when I am there.
Also you should have an article for 'We made the move' There hasn't been any updates in a while.

I realize it's a bit late for this request, since many PF attendees are already on site or en route, but thought I'd give it a try anyway. There are over 250 porcupines in our group, and I've met maybe 20 of you. I'd love the opportunity to meet more Northern Cal folks who will be at PorcFest at the end of the week. I should be fairly easy to spot. My forum name is my real name, and I'm 6'4, medium build, and I expect I will be one of very few heavily tattooed people there.
Please seek me out if you can spare a moment. I'd appreciate the opportunity to hear your ideas on building our group, or at least just put a face to the name.
Thanks! Morey

Sorry, I only saw this post today. OK, please let me know about LinuxWorld. And by strange coincidence, I just wrote a "We (royal we, obviously ) made the move" essay this morning. Perhaps it will be posted by the powers that be.

Ok will do on the LW... My company is very last minute about this stuff. I want to go anyway so I am lobbying for it. However I may have to fly to ......NH.
Great on the we made the move piece. I think that all the early movers should write them to increase momentum...

The Northern Cali contingent will be getting together on the back patio at Pyramid Alehouse in Walnut Creek on Saturday, August 27th at 1pm. We'll talk about PorcFest, FSP strategy, local recruitment, and answer questions for any prospective participants. At 2:00, we will hear from guest speaker Bernard Von NotHaus, founder of the Liberty Dollar. He will tell us about the progress of this new currency, answer questions, and give a $1 silver certificate to all in attendance. See you there! Morey

Our local Free State Project group will be meeting on Saturday at Park Chow, in the Sunset district of SF. In addition to enjoying an excellent meal with local porcupines, we will have the company of FSP leader Varrin Swearingen! If you are planning to attend, PLEASE RSVP to me, and be in front of the restaurant at 12pm sharp. Look for the FSP T-Shirt! The restaurant will not seat us with an incomplete head-count.Hope to see you there!

I don't know if anyone has read "State of Fear" by Michael Crichton but I found it a wonderful support of the "don't blindly follow" element of libertarianism. In this novel, Crichton addresses how environmentalism is partially born of special interest spin, skewed research and a lack of a discerning eye (among other things). The commentary at the end of his book is startling. Even if you support some of the current environmental causes Crichton points out some examples from the past that we would clearly dismiss today. Eugenics was once as popular as environmentalism today for example. Why am I posting this here? There is an event in San Francisco this week that I would be attending if I hadn't been on the road for the best part of the last year. I thought someone there might be interested. The information about the event is in the second link below. The first link is to a copy of Mr. Crichton's speech that preceded and precipitated his book. If anyone attends I'd *love* to hear about it!  Jean http://www.crichton-official.com/speeches/speeches_quote05.html. http://www.independent.org/events/detail.asp?eventID=111An Evening with Michael Crichton “States of Fear: Science or Politics?†Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Northern California With a panel of distinguished scientists: Sallie L. Baliunas, William M. Gray and George H. Taylor 15 November 2005 • Hotel Nikko • San Francisco • Map and Directions Private Reception 7:00 pm • Program 8:00 pm Michael Crichton At one time, both the pseudoscientific geocentric notion of the universe (that the Earth lies at the center of the solar system) and eugenics (the racial theory to “purify†the human race) were widely accepted by leaders in science, politics, journalism, and business. For example, such figures as Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Sanger and Oliver Wendell Holmes supported the eugenics movement, and the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and State, and even the Supreme Court, were supportive of eugenics policies. Such theories were pushed by powerful interest groups that possessed highly politicized agendas driving government policies and public opinion, until finally both theories were disproven by skeptical scientists. Is environmental debate today, including global warming, bio-technology, and other issues, based on science or politics? Are popular accounts of such issues rooted in science or phantom risks? Are government policies focusing on the trivial while ignoring the real, and in the process wasting limited resources, crippling human innovation to address true dangers, and inviting tyranny? Michael Crichton’s new best-seller, State of Fear, which discusses such issues, may in time be viewed as a landmark, both cautionary and prophetic. This very timely event will feature a major presentation by Dr. Crichton, along with a discussion by a panel of distinguished scientists, examining the increasing politicization of science.

Just a quick update on some planned activities for Northern Cal. I could sure use some volunteers to help make these happen! - Getting together tomorrow night for dinner and an evening with Doug Stanhope
- Hand write postcards to lost porcs (no valid email address or phone)
- Contact Libertarian College groups in our area to arrange speaking opps
- Working a table at the Central Valley LP symposium later this month

Thanks Morey. I recently moved to Sacramento (wrong direction, I know.....much further away from NH than I was before in NJ), but would like to connect with Porcs at the next appropriate opportunity
