Report from the LPC Convention
« Reply #1 on: March 16, 2004, 08:05:18 pm »

I thought I'd repost Mike's great report from the Liberatarian Party of California convention that took place Mar. 13-14 in San Jose.   Smiley

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This past weekend at the Libertarian Convention was our first
opportunity to meet other members and promote the idea of the Free
State Project. Thanks to the volunteer members that showed up, it
was a great success.

The day started with an early morning booth set-up (7AM to be exact)
followed by our first introductions among members. We quickly
prepared our ammunition: brochures, business cards, buttons, a big
banner, and big ideas.

Most of the convention attendees were already familiar with the FSP
and had many positive things to say. Of those who were negative,
they generally confined their complaints to topics such as New
Hampshire geography and weather.

We also received an invitation from a gentleman who produces a
Libertarian television show to appear on his show at a future date.
Even the local PBS affiliate expressed interest in interviewing
us.

After the convention, we headed to an Indian restaurant for dinner.
During the dinner, we brainstormed on some effective actions we can
take to build awareness for the Free State Project. While we felt
that the Libertarian Convention was chock full of an audience
receptive to the FSP idea, most of us felt that the Convention
attendees were already so familar with the FSP that they had already
made up their own minds about it.

With that said, we agreed that our mission moving forward should be
simple: educate more people about the FSP and let the people make up
their own minds...no hard selling or debating necessary. Afterall,
we're not so much selling a membership as we are sharing an idea.
A critical parallel to this mission is to keep existing members
excited and interested in the FSP idea.

In this spirit, we decided to do a few things:

1) Hold a Quarterly informal meeting (BBQ's could very well be the
preferred medium!). There's no better way to energize us like
meeting other real people who share the same ideals of life and
liberty. While we may cover some business in these meetings, the
primary purpose of these meetings is to keep ourselves energized
through social interaction. Afterall, we might be each other's
neighbor some day!

2) Build a website. Jerry Bennett has been generous enough to offer
his web development services. A website should make the Northern
California group more accesible for existing members and more
visible for non-members.

3) Target "Hot" Groups in our community. To help the FSP meet it's
20,000 goal and to keep California as the largest member state (it
is a matter of pride, afterall!), we will brainstorm a list of
organizations (local and national) with memberships that would be
receptive to the FSP idea. Libertarian, Objectivist, gun rights and
even anarchist groups come to mind. Once we have a short-list,
we'll need to do some outreach to contact their members.

I will send a separate post to the group following up on all of
these ideas and action items.

Anyways, a big THANKS to everyone who could make it...and for those
of you who couldn't, know one thing...the FSP idea is thriving!

Greetings from Fresno,

It is my great pleasure to announce a Tax Day gathering of Free State Project
members in Fresno, California on April 15th.  The meeting will serve two
purposes.  First, it will be a great chance for us to meet and get to know
each other without having to take a trip all the way out to New Hampshire
(yet).  Second, it will be an opportunity to invite guests who may be
interested in learning more about the Free State Project and meeting some of
our members.

In addition to April 15th being Tax Day, it's also New Hampshire's Tax Freedom
Day - the day of the year that the average New Hampshire resident has finally
worked enough to pay all of their taxes.  California's Tax Freedom Day isn't
until April 29th, so this meeting will mark the beginning of two extra weeks
that we Californian's have to work to pay our taxes as compared to those
living in New Hampshire.  Find out more about Tax Freedom Day at the meeting
and learn how you can get two weeks of your life back every year just by
moving to New Hampshire!

Who:            Anyone interested in the Free State Project, especially members.
When:          Thursday, April 15th, 6:00 p.m.
Where:         Hometown Buffet, Shaw and Peach, Fresno, CA
                    559-323-4557
What:           Dinner, fun, friends, and information about the FSP and NH.

Feel free to just show up.  An RSVP would be appreciated, however, to Varrin
Swearingen at varrin@freestateproject.org.  You can direct any questions there.

Hope to see some of you on Tax Day!!!

Ryan,

Would you be available to meet me and other
San Francisco libertarians this Saturday at 5PM?

Here's the info:

> > You may be interested in meeting San Francisco libertarians and discussing with them the benefits of supporting the Free State and/or moving to NH.

If so, you're welcome to attend a monthly LPSF meeting, which is held the second Saturday of each month. We discuss business from 3PM-5PM,
and then socialize informally and eat free pizza from 5PM-6PM. You may attend either or both parts of the meeting.

They're held at the Round Table Pizza at 16th and Geary. See http://www.lpsf.org/LPSF_Meetings/Meetings.html for a map.
The next meeting is this Saturday 10 April. < <

I hope you can make it Ryan (and others reading this post).

Best, Michael

If you're interested in finding out more about the

Here's a report from the Local Group chair on the results of our first meeting, held 4/18/04 in San Francisco (recopied from the yahoo group).   Smiley
----------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to all those who attended our FSP meeting in San Francisco
last yesterday!

After a spirited discussion on such issues as gay marriage, taxes,
and that ever-persistnet topic of New Hampshire geography and
weather, we dug into some FSP business.

We learned about Michael Edelstein's trip to New Hampshire, talked
about our upcoming plans to attend FreedomFest in Las Vegas, and
explored the idea of helping the national FSP use Google and
Overture to spread the word on the Internet.

We focused our discussion on upcoming events and action items
including:

+ Contact all Northern California members and encouraging them to
join our Yahoo! Group. There are hundreds of members who still are
not aware of or local group and we need to find a way to reach them
either through email, snail mail or phone. This is the immediate
priority since the more members we have, the likely we can find the
rare breed of activist who can help us with ongoing evangelism.
Mike Angiletta will contact national representatives to find the
best way to find these members.

+ Attend FreedomFest May 13-15 - the perfect excuse to go to Vegas,
enjoy all its gaudiness and still claim you went there for the
intellectual stimulation! If you want to learn more, go here:
http://www.freedomfest.com/

+ Once we've done everything we can to reach all of of the Northern
California FSP'rs, we agreed to begin concentrating on some serious
outreach efforts. Targeting "low hanging fruit" such as medicinal
marijuana groups, the NRA, liberty-oriented groups, and others would
become first priority.

Mark you calendars! Our next meeting will be on July 18th 6PM at
the Noodle House in San Francisco.

Hello friends, future neighbors, and fellow FSP members,

I really enjoyed meeting those of you that came out to Las Vegas last weekend for freedomfest.   It was wonderful swapping strategy and getting to know about different peoples goals and hopes in moving to New Hampshire with the Free State Project.
One of the things that struck me was the diversity of reasons people were sitting at the table.  Amongst our current 5700  FSP participants members  we have people of different colors-genders-lifestyles-economic means- ages-agendas-beliefs,  I realized I was meeting only a few and was excited about opportunities to meet more.
With the forming of the west coast groups we all have an excellent opportunity to bring some of the place we live with us to NH in the form of new members.  If we can all recruit 3 people in the next year we will more than meet our 20,000 person goal within the time line of 5 years originally set for the project .  If we are unable to do this it may be back to the drawing board...we may no longer have this excellent opportunity to see an area of the country and world revitalized by our efforts and the Freedom based beliefs we all share.
How bad do you want freedom?  I want it so bad that I have dropped my negative position on guns and allowed myself to see gun ownership through the eyes of a gun owner...quite a feat for a guy who group up  amongst democratic socialist parents.  In fact I have in the past 4 months of getting to know about Libertarian ideals and the FSP had to rethink a number of my old perspectives, because I so admire this ideology made strong by its commitment to  personal responsibility.
For FSP to succeed we all must to work together as a community  in recruiting the other 15000 members needed, and when the time comes helping each other with our transition into our new home... and eventually in implementing successful bids to improve the political structure of New Hampshire.
I am currently organizing the Las Vegas group and giving some time and energy each day to the FSP.  My strategy in growing FSP on the West Coast is to reach out and get involved and support as many different Liberty based groups as posiable...i'll scratch your back if you scratch mine attitude.  Using these opportunities to learn more myself, tout FSP to potential members and garner media attention regarding our cause.
The Outright Libertarians have generously offered to let us march with them in the SF gay pride parade.  This is a great opportunity to recruit from the Outright Libertarian group, attracting more people that already share Freedom based ideals is one of the best shots we have of growing our numbers.
I have attended this parade in the past however I have never had the distinct  pleasure of enjoying the walk down Market Street : ).  Although I would probably no longer go out of my way to catch the colorful spectacle the SF parade is sure to be,  I am happy to support a few FSP members from SF and fly in to assist with making sure that this excellent opportunity to advertise FSP to fellow libertarians is not wasted.  This will be a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to a community that needs help understanding the importance of keeping Uncle Sam and Big Brother out of everybody's bedroom.
If you celebrates diversity  and have no reason why you shouldn't be marching for freedom at the gay  pride parade on June 27  I urge you to contact Sandy at scitarel@yahoo.com and offer her a back-scratch.
We have one year to grow this group and we all lose if we are unable to do it through team work, it is important that we all of break through our reluctance to integrate with each of our very different target groups and start recruiting!

Yours In Freedom,

Ryan Lanzarotta

Ryan,

Your personal testimonial to freedom is inspiring.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to join Outright, the FSP, the LPSF, Gary Nolan, et. al., at Pride on 6/27. Janice and I will be at the Porcupine Festival. Please post your impressions of the event afterwards. I'm sure it will be very exciting!

I got a call from a representative of  "Cal Lib," the UC Berkeley libertarian student group. <http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~callib/>

He asked me about the FSP--he seemed to know nothing about us--and whether I would consider speaking to them, if the group were interested. He said he'd discuss it with them and get back to me.

Should they invite me, I'd like to share the podium with another FSPer or two. Please let me know if you'd be interested. It would be held somewhere on the UC Berkeley campus, time and date TBA.

BTW, don't forget our next quarterly meeting, Sunday 10/17/04. (See my post, above, for details.)

On 10/17/04, ten people attended our Local Group meeting in San Francisco. This was the largest meeting we've had since the inception of our group.

A few of the first-time attendees are already members of the FSP. Others are in various stages of considering joining. I discussed calling the Harry Browne radio program to get the word out. Mike Angiletta discussed a decentralization plan for distributing the functions of the Leader to various individuals.

Our next meeting was set for Sunday 16 January @ 6 PM.

Yo.

Are there any people in here who are members of the Libertarian Party?  I am a member of the BCLP (Butte County Libertarian Party.  I voted for Michael Badnarik, Libertarian Candidate for President.

Did anyone vote for Badnarik?
