i have seen a surprisingly small amount of information about possible demonstrations near ground zero on 9/11/06, opposing current government activity, the patriot act, and truth for 9/11, etc. are there any tristaters/midatlantic folks here who are involved with any such group traveling there next month or is there anyone interested in getting involved?

Personally, I prefer to avoid Manhattan as much as I can. And sorry to say, any demonstrators in that area on the anniversary will likely get the shit beaten out of them by misled locals and the NYPD. I'd rather choose my battles where I'm not so utterly outnumbered and outgunned.

Heh.
On September 11, I had to bring my girlfriend to the doctor's office. No, nothing wrong, just a checkup. As it turns out, even an 8:30am appointment met us with at least 30 minutes before she got to see anybody.
They had a small television in the waiting room.
Can you guess what was on?
Yes! The 9/11 Memorial Service!
The part of the memorial service that really bummed my girlfriend out was the part where they were reading off the names--in alphabetical order--of all the people that died (she won't be offended if I said that she was somewhat hormonal at the time). At almost 3,000 names, reading them at a rate of about one word per second (a lot of people have middle names, y'see), we're talking 9,000 seconds. So, with breaks and stuff, three full hours to read off the names.
I was getting frustrated with the whole thing, but I didn't want to do anything about it because there were two guys in the room wearing FDNY shirts, watching the television with passionate intent. Last thing I wanted to do was get beat to a pulp by a raging patriot.
My girlfriend got called in. After a short while, the FDNY guys left (the one guy came out of the doctor's area and walked straight out with his companion in pursuit).
As soon as the handle clicked, I said, "Can I turn the television off?" I think that pretty much everybody was too shocked to respond, but only one other person was actually watching and didn't hear me. I got his attention and asked if I could turn it off. He waved dismissively; he obviously didn't think I should, but he wasn't about to stop me. Heh.
So I turned it off. I sat back down... and I don't know if it was just me, but it felt like a 10-ton weight was lifted off of the room, and I could hear people breathing freely.
I didn't bother trying to explain myself. I figured that my actions spoke far louder than anything I could have said.
I don't know if I was a wimp to not stir up those FDNY guys. I mean, I would have loved to actually discuss things with them, but I had a sense that discussion wouldn't have been on the agenda if I had intervened.
Anyway, after about ten minutes, my girlfriend came out of the back area, and we were able to leave.
I have a few reasons for turning the television off, but mostly, it was because I could tell it was making everybody uncomfortable. I bet that, if you asked them, most of them couldn't even tell you why. Some might even chalk it up to the event being very sad. I was getting irritated because it was such an obvious explotation of the surviving. Also, few of them that participate in this farce will actually find healing; certainly not if their wounds keep being torn open for display on national television.
But that's the whole game of the state... this is one motif (among others) they use to drum up patriotic/nationalistic support for the United States of America. There's a sizeable contingent of cynics, but most of those are merely reactionary--they don't really know what's going on, either. As long as the state can continue to remind enough people how enraged they should be (and keep everybody else's eyes away from the sleight-of-hand they so love to engage in), we won't be seeing much actual change. I do realize, however, that the onus is on those who are convinced or distracted by the state, not on the state itself, for the state has no power except that which is granted to it.

Eques:
That televised report was far more painful for those "FDNY guys" whom you feared, than it was for you or your girlfiend.
Why in the world would you think you'd get beat up by firefighters (or anyone else) if you stood up and said, "Guys, this is really painful to relive. Do you mind if I change the channel?"
Don't over-think things. Don't project.

I see your point. I guess it wasn't so much that I thought, "Hey, those guys will beat me up," it was more like a gut feeling. I went with my gut on this. I guess my gut is paranoid and fearful. I've since tried to drink less caffeine. This seems to be helping.

I'm from the Philly area. I'm married with two boys and just heard about this project and joined the forum to learn more about the people involved. We are not sure about moving to NH, but have thought it would be nice to be part of a community of freedom loving people working together to be more self-sufficient in the ways of energy, food and as many services generally offered by the state. It sounds like this movement might have people interested in such things, so I'll be poking around.

It's $3.00 for a Coke at the movies that costs $0.01 to make and yet some people are only upset that the chain they go to doesn't sell Pepsi.

Also, the Free State Project hosts an annual event, Liberty Forum, after the new year. The next one will be held in mid-March. (I don't think the web page is up yet; here's a link to Liberty Forum '09 so you can get an idea.) Keep your eyes peeled for it. Beyond the scheduled events, it's a good chance for people to come up, meet some folks, and see the state!

Just wanted to check if theres any further information for people still in NYC.
Got an email off to a NYC local group coordinator a long time ago, Got a reply and basically he said he was alone out here.
There are some decent turnouts for C4L around Manhattan though.

Hello everyone, my name is Kenny and I currently living in NYC. Pretty depressed about the election but then I remembered the free state project and it gave me hope. I hope to be able to move to NH in the summer of 2013 when I graduate from college. In the mean time I would love to meet like minded folks in the area.

Hey Kenny,
What school do you go to?
I currently work in Midtown but that might change like... tomorrow hopefully (waiting on a job offer that can get me to NH).
I can't stand the statism here either, stupid Bloomberg with his Soda bans, warrantless searches, and campaign money...
I was tolerating it up till now because at least I could go back to CT where it was comparatively more "free" and where I mistakenly thought my rights were somewhat respected, but now Malloy's stupid gun ban kinda ticked me off along with the ultra high taxes here.
Probably looking to move in either May or June too - might be visiting NH next weekend to examine rentals assuming I agree to the job offer tomorrow.
