Mike Lorrey just called me...the Killington vote just passed by a landslide. He says the local and national media are swarming there. If you have access to a VCR, set it to tape the news now. I'm sure Mike will be back with all the details as soon as he can.
The news is on the front page of Yahoo! right now Here's the story: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=519&u=/ap/20040302/ap_on_re_us/killington_secession&printer=1Great news! I wonder how much effect we had on the vote.
Officially? None. The FSP doesn't seek to influence elections. This ad was an attempt to sell joining the FSP and capitalizing on the publicity presented by this. I think our ads actually did bear some sway, but with such margins of victory, nobody could really say our ads actually changed the final outcome of the vote.

This ticks me off Ultimately the voice vote could prove to be just a symbolic one since legislators in both Vermont and New Hampshire will have to approve the secession measure. The town shouldn't half to get the State's permission to secede. That's like asking a bully "Do I have your permission to stand up to you?" Anyway, That's my rant for the day. Tracy

That is funny. the union leader is a very conservative paper - BIG Benson supporters, which is good.....
They usually ignored Libs, but they have been coming around the last few years as they realize we are going to be allies more often than not, especially on budget issues....

There was an article regarding this in the Colorado Springs Gazette yesterday, I was blown away to see it in there. To bad they have to get approval by the state Christy

Okay, now that the fun is over, we have one more ad we need to do:
We need to congratulate Killington on its choice, and we need to invite residents join the FSP and/or attend a local recruitment meeting.
James: How much money is still in the kitty? Would we need to raise some more to run one more ad in the Mountain Times??
This is the payoff, folks, lets finish the job with a class job, eh?

And now, the coup de grace. Man, I'm just amped to be a part of this! Will there be any openings for pony express riders to deliver the mail to the isolated outpost of Killington, NH, dodging the hostile Vermonters all the way? Because I'd do that.

Stamp freestateproject.org on your cash! Stamp & inkpad run less than $10 & it's the single most effective and easy thing you can do for the fsp. And it's legal, just don't obscure the serial #. www.currentlabels.com

I'll contribute to a congratulatory ad, as Mike Lorrey suggested. How much do we need?

Question: Mike you may be able to get this answered by your friends in Killington...
Does the town have a good message board somewere that residents can use kind of the way we use this one?
I wonder if we could set one up for them here.... It's one small way we can show our support, by providing them a good meeting place on the web if they don't already have one.
Also does the Killington secession movement have a website yet?

No message board, no website.
While it would be nice to contribute this, and I think that each person should be able to serve in the way they feel they can be most effective, I will find out from Dave Lewis if they would like this set up for them.

No, there is no money left in the Killington account.
BUT, I see why you want to print a congrats ad, Mike, but consider this:
What about running an ad based on the VT SoS's statement that there is no way they can seceed?
Using that as our next shadow ad will allow us to put some heavy pressure on her, and by implication, the VT governor.
I sent an e-mail to Hardy asking if anyone in the Green Mountain state was interested in opening a Killington Freedon PAC, but haven't heard back from him yet.

How about: Contratulations, Killington! (pic presenting the NH flag to the town manager) (quote by SoS) There are apparently still some around here that need convincing, though. We want to help. Those interested should attend the Killington FSP meeting (here).
This should be all we have to do from then on. THe towns people are already itnerested in contacting all the vacation home owners elsewhere in the country that are paying $15/thousand in state taxes (50% more than locals) without representation. This pool should be able to raise a significant amount of money for further work in the state, and we should be able to pick up some new members from this pool around the nation.

That's ALMOST what I was thinking....... But it gets cumbersome.
I was thinking something like:
"The town of Killington has voted for Freedom and fiscal responsibility by voting to join New Hampshire. We think they're right. The Vermont secretary of state says there is no way the voice of the people will be heard in Montpellier. We think she's wrong. Call Deborah Meintkowitz (sp?) at 802-555-4556, and tell her you want the people's voice heard, and then join us in the Free State Project. Free State Project - Liberty in our lifetime".
Of course, that would be the end of a TV ad... Probably after a funny beginning to get people's attention.
Comments?
