Speaking of Yahoo FSP Website thing, What's the secret handshake? I tried to join it, it requires moderator to approve new members... it has been a few days and no word. And again, why Yahoo? FSP is already running mailman on freestateproject.org, why not just create a list for this on "our" server. |

Don't worry, you haven't missed anything in the last few days, if you don't get in soon, I'll make sure a message gets in on the inside of that list to wake up whoever is moderating that thread. And again, why Yahoo? FSP is already running mailman on freestateproject.org, why not just create a list for this on "our" server. Good question. One reason may just be historical precedent. I heard there was a group started on Yahoo! before we had much of anything of our own going on here, (in fact, I came across several of Jason P. Soren's messages on various Yahoo! groups that I've surveyed, one about starting a free country going back to 1999--long before the FSP, or "Free State Society", {the first announced name}, was ever even much of an idea). Other lists were soon started after the first one started, including state-specific ones before the vote, it grew, they grew, Yahoo! doesn't charge money to host a group discussion, and people expected new lists to be there on Yahoo!. It became our unofficial online home-away from home, and so it was, that's my guess. We certainly could do that, and it seems preferrable now, time to go look into it. . . |

Here's the text of my report I sent to the board and organizers last week:

Here's the stuff that's already been done:
1. basic design and template
2. script written and tested to dynamically load pages
3. a "vector table" that tells us what current pages are going
into an archive (not part of the usually accessible website
stuff anymore) and what pages will still be visible. I'll
send this list to you folks if you want
4. create a directory structure that makes it a bit simpler to
manage (e.g., articles will be in an 'articles' directory
further sorted by month and year)
The only stuff that left to do is:
1. Make the links on the home page fully functional. This
entails taking those pages and making them conform to the
requirements of the loading script
2. Pruning and adding additional things to the new website. I'll
leave this up to you all to decide what you want to get rid of
and what you want to add, but please let me get the basic
thing running first before we start any editing
I'd say in the next coupla days the site will be ready for people on this
email list to tear into. Probably a few more days of iterating (like
adding an obvious 'NH Info' link somewhere) and then we'll be able to go
public.
Some other things I'm working on:
1. Sorry, BOD and organizer's eyes only
2. Total redesign of the member database. Not as huge a task
as you might think -- just a difference in how I manage
databases and the say Jason does it. I'm creating some
management tools that'll allow me to do my job a little easier
3. Finish member info editing application, including adding a
password sent to new members when they join
4. Add greeter option to the join page, as well as the supporting
software to include greeter info to the info new members get
when they join and alerting greeters to new members to get
ahold of
5. Configuring the forum on the new web server. I had this
working but something broke. I'm just going to reinstall
and see what happens.
6. Eric Williams needs to get with Eric Sproul and get the
email list server up and running so we can totally get off of
Eric S's machine and start using it as a mirror site only.
All of these things will be complete sometime next week.

Here's the stuff that's already been done:
1. basic design and template Last Wednesday, I posted an XHTML/CSS div-based layout to the FSP website Yahoo group. This layout was a remake of the one made by James, for which members of the Yahoo group expressed support. My redesign (which now includes a drop-down menu) totals 48 kB. The original design totals 96 kB. Estimated download times for these pages with a 56k modem are 7 seconds and 14 seconds, respectively. I have spent several hours working on the code for this layout. Although you replied to my post on the Yahoo message board, acknowledging the value of reduced page-weight, it now appears that you've been working with and intend to proceed with the heavier layout. I am concerned that the efforts of many website volunteers (including myself) are being wasted, to the detriment of the FSP website. |

Would I be correct in assuming that no one will be allowed to review the source code for security bugs, maintenance issues, etc? Lord knows it'd be bad if the only guy that could decypher the spaghetti code just got hit by a bus.... |

That's just fine. But where were you last August when we *really* needed people to start worknig on a redesign? One person came up with an excellent design and no others surfaced until after the first part of October. I'm really sorry you wasted your time, but it was your time to waste. You decided to do it, right? Were you asked to do it? Did you make an announcement that you were going to do it? No, you just voluntarily went ahead and did it and then got mad because you're being ignored. I asked for redesign ideas over two months ago and you just come up with one now? And you accuse me of being a detriment to the website? So now I find myself in a predicament where people like you are coming out of the woodwork with what probably are very good designs (or at least a good outline for a design) and I'm at least a month into making the redesign a reality! In fact, it'll be presented to the board this week! You should've jumped on the bandwagon last August, man. Sorry, but the show must go on and it is going on. All I can righly be accused of is not getting this redesign done sooner. If I would have had it up and running October 1st, you would have never had the chance to waste your time. Matt |

It's not accurate to imply that Justin is unwilling to give his code to the FSP. For the benefit of those who don't have access to the message he publicly posted on the members-only Yahoo group on Oct. 8, and which is still there for anyone with access to read, this is what he actually said: Given the Member Profile application I wrote depends heavily upon pre- existing personal infrastructure code, and given that I have no faith in the abilities of those tasked with governing the web-presence of the FSP, I hereby withdraw my offer to supply the FSP with any products or services until such time as new technology leadership is put in place. Wow, personally, I'm impressed that Matt's responses have been as polite and mild as they have been, considering all the venom that has been spewed at him about these website issues. It must be nice to be as perfect as the folks who have been chewing Matt up and spitting him out. I'm sure if they were in charge the world would be a better place.  Obviously, there are some real problems here, but I think it would behoove everyone to remember that (as has been pointed out a time or two) this is an unpaid, volunteer position. Presumably, Matt and all the other volunteers have real lives that command their attention and real jobs that require their time. All this carping is reminiscent of many of the nasty posts seen on the Which State? board. Do you all just need someone to rag at to make you happy? I think Matt deserves quite a lot more respect, even when you are complaining about legitimate issues. This kind of ugliness is really counterproductive. |

With all due respect, unless you've been involved with the situation for years, as I have been, or been one of the many volunteers blown off by his bizarre disappearances and complete unwillingness to take any help or suggestions offered, you have no idea what you're talking about. I have emails from last fall in which Board Members discuss how to pry any kind of tech schedule out of Matt -- even then, he continually made promises he didn't keep, and refused to give status updates when asked. He's ten times more a roadblock and bottleneck than a help. And frankly, if Matt engaged in a dialogue, and offered information about what he was up to, he might have avoided the level of frustration that's arisen. But he's hidden from legitimate questions, which naturally evolved into frustrated criticisms, and lost even more credibility as a result. |
