That goes out to all of you who voted against NH simply because you resented the inconvenience and sacrifice of moving cross country.
It goes out also, however, in a sarcastic way, to all you New Hampshirites who cast the bold and hugely sacrificing vote for your home state. I'm extremely skeptical of an entrenched demographic which hasn't moved off the dime in generations, dictating to those (myself and others) for whom the move constitutes essentially and in practice a very large risk, sacrifice, and burden.

*is confuzzled* So are you pro-NH, anti-NH, or what...?  Whatever the case I don't think we'll be going to NH, despite my best wishes. My gut tells me it's going to be some crazy, stupid state that none of us want -- North Dakota springs to mind. I think, come Wednesday, there's going to be a large sigh of disappointment. |

Now there's an example of a (bad) strategic vote. You can't seriously expect me to believe that while you rate Idaho, Sth Dakota and Montana in the top four, you sincerely would prefer to move to your ninth preference Delaware before moving to Wyoming!
I know the Condorcet (Condor-say {French name}) method is hard to understand (at first), but voting WY last does not promote NH in any way with reference to WY, compared to voting it second or fifth.
That having been said, it has already been revealed that it (whichever state) was a clear winner, and you clearly prefer NH, which was also my first preference.

I will reluctantly move to NH if that is the (unfortunate) choice, but I wouldn't call myself ready.
WY > SD > AK > ND > MT > NH > VT > DE > ID > ME

No. I am not ready to move to NH. However, given another 10 years to save up money, I will likely be ready to move to NH if it is selected. Because the cost of living is so high compared to where I live, I want to make sure that I have enough to pay for around 1/2 of my house with the downpayment. I can still help NH from somewhere else, though. I am ready to visit NH in the next 3 years, though, if it is selected.

I bet that: NH's cost of living + very low tax burden + relatively high incomes = greater financial security than any other of the candidate states. NH has the lowest tax burden of the ten, with the on-again off-again exception of Alaska. NH has the fifth highest per-capita income in the nation, number one among the ten states. NH's cost of living may be high compared to WY and MT, but it is actually quite moderate compared to the nation as a whole. The difference isn't that dramatic. Coming from over-taxed, high-wage but high-cost Maryland, I know I'll personally be better off, and I'm hoping to be up there by next summer. Assuming a NH win. 21 hours and counting. |

Look up in Coos county and along the east bank of the Connecticut River and you'll find find a incredibly cheap real estate. Here's a good real estate web site: http://www.pruverani.comLots of stuff available for less than $100,000. Much for under $50,000. |

I'm coming from CA, specifically the L.A. area. I haven't bought a house yet -- and I'm definitely old enough that I should have by now -- because I cannot afford to pay $600k for a 3bd/2bath. Believe me, there is not a single state in the vote in which real estate appears prohibitively expensive to my eyes.

Coming from a town where a modest home costs $35,000, I'm amazed at what I can't buy in NH.
Hank, you live in an extreme rural part of your state, don't you? So its pretty unfair to compare the bustling southern quarter of NH to your neck of the woods. Try Coos County, NH, where you can find pleanty $35,000 and under. You don't really want to live in Manchester or Portsmouth anyway, do you? |

Hank, that $12.9k job in Gorham looks like a double-wide mobile (Jeff Foxworthy can kindly kiss my ass, and he'll probably have to retire to a wheeled house himself when the masses finally tire ;) of his 'humor') which is a fairly good price, if the home's in good shape.
There's a big problem with NH (the likely winning state), however, and that is the high property tax.
The Californian-like herd mentality which just goes along with high property taxes, has to stop.
When you come on across the country from the People's Republic of California (or Washington), leave
behind the Marxian taxation schemes, please. Thanks.
One of the first things we ought do as Free Staters is to change that[/i] crap. A Libertarian (i.e., productive) state would not depend on such an obvious crutch as high property taxes.

I think everybody agrees that it should be sharply reduced. But keep in mind that, unlike other states that spread the tax burden across multiple taxes (property, sales and income), NH has all three lumped into one large property tax. Its high visibility has been one of the reasons NH's overall tax burden continues to be the lowest in the nation. NH citizens certainly aren't "in a herd mentality" -- they're angry about the high property tax and want to see it reduced. In any case, we don't want to spread the tax burden across taxes. That would hide the burden from taxpayers, as it has happened in most other states. There is one major downside of the property tax system that I see -- the assessment system. A house you could afford the taxes on ten years ago could suddenly be unaffordable once the assessors pay a visit. The net result is the government can "raise" taxes without raising them, if you get my meaning. |
