I have concluded (this is not a revelation or epiphany) that trying to convince the government or even a large body of citizens that the drug war is an utter and complete failure is a vain effort. Even pointing out that drugs are more prevalent now that 5 or 10 years ago, doesn't seem to register, other than to convince them that the war must go on at all costs. Our jails wouldn't be overflowing if those incarcerated soley for drug related offences were freed. But, all of you already know this. My point is that the drug war is just a symptom of what is wrong with this country (the Federal government). It is the total control of the American people that is the goal. I sincerely believe that the root of what enables the government to do what they do is our tax system. It gives them the total control of our lives that enables them to do whatever they want. If they didn't have their hands deep into our pockets, they coulnd't do most of the other things they do. Most Americans wouldn't advocate the outright legalization of drugs, but if the Feds were to end the war, it could be up to the states to decide what they wanted. It is after all a states rights issue.
