I recently joined the FSP and bought some merch including a few Copper Rounds and I had a few questions. No doubt their awesomeness is legendary but what exactly could they be traded for? Because the price bracketing varies the cost of a coin a lot from $5 to $.67 I'm just wondering what people have traded for them. A pack of gum? A gallon of milk? The silver round makes more sense to me. Or are they just really awesome paper weights/advertisements for the FSP?

I recently joined the FSP Welcome! and bought some merch including a few Copper Rounds and I had a few questions. No doubt their awesomeness is legendary but what exactly could they be traded for? Closer to awesome paperweights imo -- though you could trade the copper round, I doubt you'd get $5. Maybe $1 or $2 worth of stuff. So, slightly less than a gallon of milk I guess. And generic silver ounces can be had a lot cheaper, if you're just looking for the silver content (though people will pay a bit more for the fsp design). If you want something to trade with, that you can buy close to spot, I recommend pre '64 silver coins, especially dimes. Here's one place to buy them, online: http://www.apmex.com/Category/17/90_Silver_Generic_Bags.aspxAre you coming to porcfest?

That's kind of what I thought about copper. I'll be sure to get silver ones from now on. And haha I'm probably on apmex 2-3 times a day researching, among other related websites. One thing I don't understand is how the FSP silver round is $25, and if you get one from Canada is $35ish? That's a huge price cut, do you know why? And I'm not really for pure silver content, or trading for the time being. I want something more like 1 oz rounds or 5oz bars. I'm basically using silver as a short term investment. I'll be a senior in high school next year, and want to save some up, and possibly get a tiny return on it after 4 years of college. Every now and again apmex will have a sale and 1oz rounds drop to $.99 over spot and that's probably what I'll wait for. But if FSP rounds are only $25 and will atleast be redeemed for $25 in 4 years, I'll go with them instead. Don't want my money in a bank, or in dollars. And my soul will be at porc fest but sadly, I'm still under the rules of my parents. I didn't even ask, they aren't big fans of libertarianism, and one look at the big gay dance and people smoking weed would give them a stroke. Maybe next year. Sorry for the length!

The copper rounds were designed to be a heavy business card that people won't throw away if you gave them one. Due to the manufacturing cost vs the price of copper, they're not meant for barter, at least not for the initial purchaser. The silver round was sold at $25 back when silver was trading far lower. Again, manufacturing costs push the price higher than the spot price of silver. Currently AOCS shows them at just over $37. I'm not sure how many you'd need to order to get them to make a new run. http://aocsmint.com/silver/2009-silver-1oz-brilliant-uncirculated-free-state-project.htmlIf the FSP gets the funds to do a new run, I've suggested redoing the reverse side to have the larger URL, as exists on the copper round.

I suspect that the silver rounds are listed for $25 because they're out of stock. Spot's around $30, and there's no way I could see them going for less than that. $1 over spot for rounds is a good deal -- but I prefer the dines, because they're so much more practical for barter. It's hard to buy a $2 item with a $30 round . As far as porcfest goes, I doubt this will make your parents like the idea, but going to porcfest doesn't mean you have to do these things, any more than going to a concert means you've got to mosh. Neither my wife nor I smoke pot or go to the dance party . Heck, we've never smoked pot.

That's kind of what I figured about the copper rounds. oh well. And for when I move to NH I guess I'll switch over to dimes and smaller pieces, but At the moment it's more of a short term investment. And that makes sense about the FSP rounds, I didn't know they were out of stock for that long..

And about porc fest, I wish, but it doesn't matter that I am not gay or don't even want to smoke weed, the fact that it's there is the issue

But for trade you should consider Shire Silver. There's even an FSP branded version, which I'd love to see get put up on the merchandise page - if I can ever figure out who to talk to to get that done.

In my opinion silver and gold isn't a good short term investment at this point. Some of the big silver holders are selling their assets so the price is dropping in spite of a lack of naturally occurring silver and a dropping dollar. I think this will go on for an other year or two and he will buy it all back when the price is very low or before another mine runs out.
