Hello from Ithaca, NY
« on: February 05, 2012, 04:08:11 am »

Hi.  My name is Dan.  I live in Ithaca, NY and have lived here for 5 years.  I was born in a small town in eastern CT, and lived there for a majority of my life, as well for my wife.  I have only recently heard about FSP, through Free Talk Live, which I listen to at work sometimes.  What I hear and read about it, I feel good about, and feel that it would be a welcome change for my wife and I.

I just don't know what I could bring to the movement.  I am 38 years old, and have had quite the life so far, which a majority of has left me severely introverted, and I find it hard to meet and accept new people, change, etc...

We have been talking lately about moving.  Moving back to New England, where all our families are, where all our roots are.  What I've been hearing, on free talk live, about the FSP has piqued my interest to no end, how I feel about everything and how I just want freedom, liberty and equality for all persons.

I'm worried about my history.  I am a convicted felon, for narcotics, part of my past.  Spent time in jail, and realized that that wasn't the life for me anymore, met a good woman, got married, and have been carrying on ever since.  It's been a long time since then that I have just been "living my life", and nothing more.

Which brings me to I'm also worried about work.  I am a delivery driver/landscaper (about the best a felon can get), but my wife is the major "bread"winner. (I put bread in quotes because she is a baker, has a degree in baking, loves to do it.)

I'm just worried about another change the best an anxious introvert can.

Everyone has different approaches to reform. You can do as little as participating in the gray economy and nothing else through to being a full time activist, its really up to you and what you consider the best approach to be.

I'm sure you know what our position on the legal status of drugs is, these are not crimes.

NH has extremely low unemployment, I wouldn't imagine finding work to be an issue. Indeed has 9,572 available jobs in NH right now.

Welcome Dan.  Worried about change?  I'm 58yo from 4 generations in one town in CT and been living in NH for 3 yrs.  Best move I made,  I wish I made the move when I was 30!   You claim you're a felon due to narcotics.  That's a broad category.  Many here may only recognize an actual felon as one that harmed another not those convicted of a malum prohibitum crime.    You will find that many liberty activists have arrest and conviction histories from writing with chalk on sidewalks to murder charges although none have harmed property nor hurt anyone, go figure.
If you wonder how you can contribute to forwarding liberty, start with understanding  the basic of non aggression     www.isil.org/resources/introduction.swf
Then just network the liberty community to see where you fit in and feel comfortable.  I help with www.NHLiberty .org   www.NHJury.org  www.fr33aid.com  www.porcfest.com www.livefreeordierally.com  among the hundred liberty groups ( I bet it's close to that #   Anyone counted the groups and sites?) already here in NH.   Come visit us and NH at Liberty Forum or PorcFest

This is a perfect place to come out of your shell... or not.  Odds are better you'll be a more effective activist if you can socialize with people so they will want to help you.  Drop into the Shire Society forum and introduce yourself: http://forum.shiresociety.com

Seneca Falls, NY, your neighbor to the north by a few minutes. Come join the party.

Liberty Lover on New Hampshire seacoast

I lived in Rochester, NY from '99 to '06, but had moved to Utah before learning of the FSP, so I had a lot further to move to get here (just arrived in NH last year, and now am living in Rochester, NH) :-).

I'm 37, not a felon, and quite introverted as well, probably don't have any better a job than you, though I have more opportunities to move up in the world and finally get something good going here, due to being closer to things here than I was the last 5 years before moving.

New Hampshire is a good place to be, a good economy but a lot of diversity of population choices in where you live, and you can get as involved in social things here as you want. Some of that may depend on what part you choose to live in. If you go to Manchester, Nashua, Concord, or Keene, there will be a lot of other FSPers around to hang out with. On the seacoast, we don't have as many people but we still have regular social events, and I find that even though my life is not much different, I do socialize more just as a side-effect of being around more people.

I recommend you come check us out in NH sometime - you're close enough you can drive over to visit much more easily than I could while I was in the west. If you can't make it to Porcfest, a week long starting on Monday, you might try to visit during another big event, or just come out and let people know on here and the Shire Society forum and you'll be able to meet some people during your visit.

Does your job or your wife's have any connection to the two colleges in Ithaca or is it just a coincidence that you live in the same town as both Ithaca College and the Ivy League school, Cornell University? The reason I ask is we have an Ivy League here also, Darthmouth College, as well as several other universities.

Don't know how I missed this awhile ago. My bf went to school in Rochester for 4 years, he absolutely hated it. The winters are definitely better here, he says, and it's definitely safer and less decaying, at least in Manch. We are both also relatively introverted, we mostly socialize on the weekends and focus on work, gym, learning new skills, video games, etc during the week, but it is really nice to always have the option to meet up with people anytime. We're not super-activists by any stretch. I think you and your wife would be a welcome addition if for nothing other than moving here as peaceful, productive people. Which is plenty. Manch has had kind of a ridiculous number of cafes/bakeries opening lately, so she may not want to set up shop in this town, but if she is very passionate I think she could do well just about anywhere else. Unless she wants to work for someone else, then she would probably have plenty of opportunities here!
