I posted in one of the other threads Thursday morning. That discussion took a different turn so I thought it better to start fresh.
Quick facts on myself for those who didn't see my other post: 24 year Wyoming resident Disgruntled Republican 2002 intern for the Wyoming State Legislature I am not an FSP member Consider me an impartial observer.
In my other post I did offer to answer questions any of you may have about Wyoming to the best of my ability. These are the questions I have gotten so far.
1) What would Wyoming residents think about a campaign to legalize marijuana?
The legalize medical marijuana does have some support. In the last session the measure received a majority vote that allowed it to be introduced as a bill. The bill was sent to the Senate Judiciary commitee and received a do pass recommendation on a 3-2 vote. Because of the short length of Wyomings legislative sessions there was not time for the bill to be taken up by the Senate. This particular bill sort of surprised me when it popped up. There is some support for legalizing medical marijuana. However you don't hear about it much as no one has really taken control of a solid campaign to put the issue to serious consideration. As for legalizing marjuana overall I think this is a one step at a time issue.
2) What do Wyoming residents think about the federal government buying them new electronic touch-screen voting machines?
The only comments I have ever heard about the touch screen machines are "I hate technology" or "technology is great". Voting fraud doesn't rank very high on our list of concerns. Some people may think that makes us naive. I would counter that it is more a case of trust than ignorance. The people safegaurding the votes are our friends, neighbors and people we do business with everyday.
The big question I have gotten is "How will the FSP be recieved if they come to Wyoming"?
At the moment I am not ready to give an opinion on the general populace. I want to wait a couple of more days to see if any editorials pop up after the recent FSP story in the Cheyenne paper. I am also trying to get a good hold on just what your politics entail. I understand your general concepts of small government, privatization and lack of interference. But like any sizeable group you all seem to be moving in the same direction along slightly different paths. I've spent 10 to 12 hours reading your boards now and I even took a Libertarian Purity Survey thats linked from the Wyoming Libertarian party page. If you're curious I scored a 44, somewhere between soft core and medium core Libertarian.
I'll get back to you in a few days with an opinion of how I feel people will react.

Thanks for your comments, Cheyenne. Please don't judge us by some of the antics you see here. The vast majority of the FSP population does not post here, so it is a question what their politics are, but they are probably disgruntled LP members, some not-so-disgruntled, some paleo-conservatives, some constitutionalists, some hard-money advocates, some free-market greens, etc. etc. Probably the best guess is they all want to be more free than they are now.
On that touch-screen thing, it may be a mistake to brush it off by saying these folks are your friends and neighbors. Voting is all about applying government force, and many people can be Jeckyl/Hyde when it comes to voting and making sure "their" side wins. There are a lot out there who are happy to take advantage of that kind of trust.
I will be interested to hear of any letters to the editor. That paper does not post them on the internet.

What are the main issues in contention between Republicans and Democrats in Wyoming? What do they try to out-do each other on?
Also, what is your impression of Governor Freudenthal? I imagine that he can't be too much of a flaming liberal to have been elected to statewide office in Wyoming. He also seems to have avoided raising much sand with the GOP dominated legislature.

Not to worry much about them since they won't move east of the Mississippi anyway -- regardless of their BS saying they will. I assume you meant to say west of the Mississippi.. You know, for all this talk about eastern-state supporters not being "committed", many have vocally said (and are excited about) moving anywhere. Meanwhile, many western supporters (cough..EMOR..cough) haven't said they'd move east, and by all indications have no intention of doing so.

Hi Cheyenne,
Understand life keeps us busy, but do hope you can find time to post your thoughts on what the people out your way think of us. We have heard so little from you folks!

My handy dandy road atlas shows that there's an Air Force Base outside of Cheyenne. Is it still active?

Could you point me to some more information about those touch-screen voting machines? Is it the Diebold system?
Thanks,
Eddie

Yes, it is 100% active. I went to it while in Cheyenne recently. It is a nice base. Actually, I almost hit a deer on my way out, even though it was rush hour. Just like in ME, SD, or AK (maybe NH too), we will not get far in Wyoming if we criticize the Air Force every chance we get. It is fine to say the Air Force is too big but to speak bad of it...

You won't get any negative talk from me regarding our Armed Forces. We can reasonably debate foreign policy, the proper role and size of the military, and other such matters, but to make blanket assertions that the military is evil is something that make me roll my eyes and shake my head in disbelief.
