Hello All,
So I have done a number of personal development programs through the years (Landmark, sales training, many lesser known programs) and I have really found many of these programs helpful in becoming a better communicator and inspiring me to do more and better things. Not to say these programs are perfect! I come from a very technical background and thought a lot of this stuff was complete crap many years ago, but in hindsight I was simply to caught up in myself to see the value in expanding my boundaries.
I have been in conversations with several folks in and associated with the FSP who place similar value in personal development programs and we agree that *some* aspects of these programs could be very beneficial to the FSP. I believe there are a lot of folks who are now in a similar place to where I was - full of self-limiting beliefs that are minimizing what results are possible personally and within the liberty movement.
Of course everyone is different and many of the programs out there are stuck in a statist paradigm to one degree or another. So I am not certain there is one path that everyone should take. I think the real question at this point is: can these kinds of programs be of value to the FSP/liberty movement and how to spread these kinds of lessons within the movement?
So I thought maybe have an open discussion/roundtable at Liberty Forum on this very topic and perhaps have a few panelists but invite audience participation. Something titled something like "Amplifying & Inspiring Liberty Activists" where we have some panelists from different backgrounds and proponents of programs like: >NVC / Non violent communication >Landmark education >Freedomain radio community >Dale Carnegie >etc. Not saying any of the above are good or bad (though I know some liberty activists who are proponents of these programs) but I think it would be useful for people to know the kinds of things out there. The panelists could talk about how those programs could be used to inspire and build interpersonal skills to make liberty activism more effective. We could also allow some breakoff sessions for more specific introductions into some of the programs explored in the roundtable - this might help attract let's say an NVC trainer for less cost (maybe free?) than if they just came up to join a discussion, because it could be a chance to gain clients. However we can discuss the merits of bringing up any professional trainers - maybe we just have a discussion amongst FSPers about these programs. I also thought there are a couple of liberty related media (podcasts) that might be able to turn this into a topic area and perhaps make the event into a broadcast.
Perhaps this could lead to some further development of institutions for FSPers and/or a continuing dialogue for Porcfest.
If folks think this is an idea that should be developed further I would be happy to help in some of the organization. Thoughts?

This is a good idea. The art of libertarian persuasion is one that we can always be improving. Different methods work better for different folks depending on one's personality, background, style, etc. Bring it on!

Exciting, thanks! Please let me know as I have been talking to a number of people about this many of whom are interested in participating. I would be happy to jump on the bandwagon for someone else already running with the idea and not reinvent the wheel.

I hate Landmark Education. I'm sorry, but I don't want to have the Free State Project have anything to do with an organization like that. I hope others that felt duped by Landmark Education will post their opinions. The other groups mentioned were or seem very different.

So noted Mike! It is my personal hope that some within the FSP can develop some programs that might take elements that are useful from the branded stuff but leave behind the bad stuff and be free or freemium for everyone.

Chris/Dreepa - any updates here? I have several people interested in this.... Didn't see anything on the schedule that matched, but maybe I did not look closely?

oh sorry.. the new schedule isn't on the website... but on Saturday there is a session called 'free for all'... an unconference within the Liberty Forum. On Friday night we will meet and anyone and everyone can bring up a topic that they want to present on Saturday... then we will print up a schedule and post it for Saturday... so any and all ideas welcome... it will be a session.... that people want... and during times that people want....

Thanks Chris! Are all the unconference topics during a certain time that Saturday or can I (and my friends) plan for a time for that Saturday for our topic? That way I can let some folks know who already expressed interest.

It's an "unconference"....I think you would have to go to the Friday "planning" meeting and work out the details then. The extent of Liberty Forum organizers involvement is providing the room and printing up a schedule after the Friday meeting.

Though it would be helpful to have even rough idea of time since we might have some people coming in just for this event.
