Hello, I have a question!
« on: August 25, 2011, 09:33:35 am »

Hi there! I'm currently disabled due to a work injury! I'm currently recieving workers compensation and am currently filing for Disability! I totally love this movement (FSP) and if I were not tied down here with a gazillion Doctors appointments and so forth would join and move ASAP! My question is, with me being disabled and recieving checks from workers comp and soon to be replaced by Social Security Disability, is this frowned upon? I'm surely not happy to be in this situation and worked my butt off until I got injured! Not only did I work at a Resteraunt but also had my own business as well!I even frowned upon people who claimed their back was bothering them until I ended up flattening my left ciatic nerve root tip while cleaning up after a shift in the resteraunt!

I'm here to tell ya, back pain and nerve damage are absolutey the worst pain one could ever experience and truely believe the old saying that "back pain is worse then child birth", altho I am male! Also, I have many medical records (x-rays, MRI's etc...) to back all this up! I feel embarressed and for lack of better words "not a man" because I am dependant on workers comp and social security disablity! I'm humiliated everytime I have to recieve a check from workers comp but if I dont recieve it my bills dont get paid and I dont eat so i have to! Also, In NH, is there good pain management facilities that aren't affraid to write pain meds to people who honestly need them and couldnt in any way function with out them? Any and all responses are welcomed by me here, I'f I get possitive feed back I will DEFINATELY join and move, its just a matter of getting all of my medical treatment that can be done to hopefully reduce the intake of pain meds before I move and theres no telling how long that will take!

Thank You!

Opinions will vary widely. Personally, taking your post at face value (i.e. you have a legitimate, serious injury which prevents you from working), I wouldn't find fault with collecting from Social Security disability - for the same reasons I wouldn't find fault with an old person collecting from Social Security, or a parent sending their kids to public school, or any of us driving on publicly subsidized roads.

I'm in a similar situation with a back injury, but only a few people fault me or give me a hard time for drawing disability benefits.  You know as well as I do how difficult it can be, but you may have to drive into Mass more than a few times to get access to specialists.

BTW, I have learned that the people who blame you for taking disability benefits don't do anything, anyway, so as far as I am concerned, they're off my RADAR.

First of all, it's not your fault the government stole money from you to put into phony insurances like Social Security and worker's comp. This makes it harder for you to afford to buy your own disability insurance. Second, they created an environment where people don't expect to have to provide for themselves, so many people don't think about buying insurance. Third, the phony insurances get their money not from investing your contribution, but from taxing other people.

So two points are in your favor, one not. Whether people accept you is based on which of those points is most important to them. Personally, I'm in favor of giving people the benefit of the doubt.

I do hope you can find a way to work in spite of your disability, maybe online work. I've greatly admired two disabled men I knew who worked: one, blind, got special listening / speaking equipment and went to college. The other, mostly paralyzed on his right side, drove a car with a special left foot gas pedal, taught himself to sort of walk / shuffle, and made a living teaching in an athletic pursuit he loved but could never do again. They are two of the most upbeat guys I have ever met.

I don't know about pain management facilities, but I wish you the best of luck with your problem. I hope to see you in NH before too long.

I believe that many people will accept you for these reasons.  If they don't, then they arn't someone you need to know anyway.  Hope to see you at Porcfest, as i am still in Mississippi, but i'm goin there this summer.

I've got no problem with this -- they made you pay into their 'insurance' program in the first place. Sometimes they create circumstances where we have no choice but to use their services -- e.g. we all use the roads.

I look forward to seeing you here Smiley

Also, I'm sorry about the pain man, I hope you find relief.

Thanks for all your feed back! This makes me feel a lot better about joining, so I will in the future after I get everything squared away with workers comp! I know its cold up there and I don't like the cold but I will deal with it for the cause, the cause trumps the cold all day, any day! One post said something about working, at this point I can't because I'm stuck in my recliner 99% of the day, the other 1% I'm going to the bathroom! HOPEFULLY, when I get the Nuerostimulater I will be able to at least function a little bit and believe me, if I can make money else where as well I will! As far as specialist goes, I've seen 2 of them and had surgery on my L5/S1 Disk which was replaced! unfortunately now I have nerve damage from not only the surgery but from having the root tip flattened for 9-10 months before the surgery! So, we'll see what happens and I can't wait to get all this behind me and move to NH for the cause!

Thanks again for all your replies  Smiley

I have an idea of the pain; I herniated my L5/S1 it is crippling. I got lucky with a good response to a steroid injection. I just found a good nurse practitioner for primary care and she confirmed, through experience, that spinal pain is much worse than child birth. She is in Concord - Anderson Family Healthcare.
