I have a car that isn't titled in my name that is loaned to us by a relative. The NH DMV tells me the only way the car can have a NH tag is if the title holder resides in NH. Is there a way around this? Otherwise I'll need to drive the car to my home state once a year to get it licensed and inspected.
On a side note does NH have vehicle inspections and if so how anal are they about window tinting? Thanks in advance.

If a car is owned by someone in another state you are not required to register it in NH to drive it here.
Are you sure your former state requires the car to be physically present to be re-registered? Most can be done by mail.
Don't worry about inspections. NH police do not enforce other state's inspection laws.

My state does allow for registration by mail. However they have tied the inspection and registration process together. Meaning that your car must be inspected two months prior to registration expiration. If you show up to the DMV to get your tags renewed they will not renew them if your annual inspection has expired. |

I can renew online if the inspection is completed prior to them receiving my request for renewal. It used to be that one hand didn't know what the other was doing but the masters have began to communicate better about what the slaves are doing. The NH DMV tells me the only way the car can have a NH tag is if the title holder resides in NH. That's incorrect. It's wherever the car is primarily used. For example, someone could have a legal residence in Florida, but come up to NH every summer, and keep a car registered here to avoid transporting it twice each year. The title holder would have to be the one requesting the registration, but there's no reason it cannot be registered here, if this is where it will be used. Another option would be for the title holder to create a corporation (and be the sole owner of that corporation) and have the title holder sell the car to the corporation. Just do it in a state that does not require inspections, and does allow for paperwork to be completed by mail. Joe |

We've decided to get the car lien satisfied within the next year. That being said its up for registration renewal here next month. Our projected arrival in NH for residency is between Aug and Sept. From that time until next year when the tags expire do you think we'll have any issues with NH and the out of state tags? |

Our projected arrival in NH for residency is between Aug and Sept. From that time until next year when the tags expire do you think we'll have any issues with NH and the out of state tags? There's probably a slightly higher chance of getting pulled over, since cops assume you're a tourist who won't come back to fight a ticket. So just be careful. NH will expect you to get a NH driver's license once you're a resident, so bear that in mind. Renewal for DL's and vehicle registrations both take place on your birth month. If you're within four months (I believe it's four) of your birth month, they bump it up to the next year (so the first renewal of the registration is in as much as sixteen months, instead of twelve). So if one of you has a fall birthday, it may be best to have that name first on the registration. Joe |
