The Onion
« on: November 13, 2008, 05:23:17 pm »

Both the print and the online editions are gaining popularity.  This is ripe recruiting grounds:  how many of us have read an Onion article?

They consistently shred the government, and shine flashlights on it's ineptitudes and inefficiencies.  And, importantly, they are timely about it. Take this recent video:

All the info I can get about advertising on TheOnion is the following:
Quote
Please send all advertising inquiries to: advertising@theonion.com

Please specify the business you would like to advertise, your location, and whether you are interested in web advertising, newspaper advertising, or both. The appropriate advertising sales representative will get back to you promptly.

For advertising information about specific Onion print-edition markets, please visit: mediakit.theonion.com.

Let me know what they say, Dan.

One thing about advertising in a place like the Onion is that it casts such a wide net.  The audience is too general.  They reach conservatives, liberals and everything in between.  That means you pay to reach a lot of people that the FSP doesn't necessarily care to reach.  I mean, we don't mind reaching them,  but it's not our target audience.  Pay per click advertising is the very best way I've found to advertise such a specialized message as the FSP.

HOWEVER...if the Onion had a forum or a comment section, that would be very worthwhile.

If the Onion has a local edition in MA, that may be very worthwhile.

Targeted advertising is where it's at. Look at how successful Seth's facebook campaign is.

I agree that readers of The Onion would be more receptive than say, The New York Times, but with the limited budget available, it just wouldn't be feasible (as I'm sure something as popular as The Onion is quite pricey.)

How about advertising in The New American, The Idaho Observer, Liberty, LP News, or Reason?

(All the more reason for more monthly donors to the FSP!)

Didn't the Free State Project advertise in Reason at one point? I seem to remember getting excited about seeing an ad.

Was it you Lloyd in the ad? Smoking a pipe? Something like "Uncle Lloyd says Join the Free State Project, because it's the smart thing to do for freedom"?

We are trying to recruit people to move to NH and be liberty activists in NH.  The people don't have to be liberty activists where they currently live.

I think that it is easier to recruit liberty activists or at least people who know about liberty but just aren't active where they currently live.  Recruiting clueless people is possible but we may have to first show them how they are losing liberty, which is an extra step.

Not really.  The FSP isn't about selling libertarianism.  It's about getting liberty lovers to move to NH.

Makes sense.  When I talk to my friends about it I usually don't get any where so I can definitely see why we would want to leave that step out.

Well, many of us support organizations that try to help others understand and appreciate liberty, but the FSP has a different focus.  Also, when we get to NH, it's important to be able to explain and defend one's beliefs.

Yeah I need someone to help me work on that, but I'm learning more and more everyday.

correct.  I wasn't an activist before I moved.

If we have the 10000 people NOT in NH... recruiting (that is a form of activism) it would
1. complete the 20K
2. get them practice for when they moved to NH to be activists.
