Rich from Grafton has a great story about their sheriff there. I'll let someone else tell it. From what I hear, Merle, their sheriff, is awesome.

Police Chief. Merle is a Peace Officer. He's not roving around all the time looking for people breaking the law. The people of Grafton voted down every budget increase, except a raise for Police Chief.

I don’t know if we have one. County sheriffs are elected officials, so maybe a freestater will run for it next time.
Unfortunately most of the powers the sheriffs have had traditionally has been transferred down to local police or up to the State Police (both unelected positions, interestingly), so don’t expect to see our sheriffs going around arresting Fedgov agents like I’ve heard some out west have done. The primary job of the sheriffs here is to run the county jails and transport prisoners, so I don’t think it would be an attractive job for many liberty activists.

Although, at the same time...it is an elected position as opposed to an appointed position... For someone interested in pursuing it...it might be an "interesting" position to share the message of Freedom and Liberty from... www.campaignforliberty.com

I was hoping that maybe someone was going to say that there was a Sheriff in NH like Sheriff Bill Masters of San Miguel County (Telluride), Colorado. As far as I know, he is the only libertarian Sheriff in the U.S. After doing a google search for "Libertarian Sheriff" I discovered he is the editor of "The New Prohibition: Voices of Dissent Challenge the Drug War" and the author of "Drug War Addiction: Notes from the Front Lines of America's #1 Policy Disaster". Maybe we can persuade him to move to NH

I was thinking this would be a good fit for KBCraig.

Maybe we can persuade him to move to NH hard to compete with where he lives ... some people think it is the most beautiful place in America it is also hard to convince elected officials to leave where they have power ... it is easier for those of us that didn't already have power positions

sheriffs are elected... why would we elect a looter/bureaucrat/jackboot/mercenary as opposed to someone much more committed to the Philosophically Mature Non-Aggression Principle... needless to say...I don't think we should support someone who continues to assist in the aggression/force/fraud of the "state" after being repeatedly asked to cease, desist, and quit... I'd vote for Russell Kanning for Sheriff... Kevin...not so much...

Other 'officials' are elected... don't they fit under your looter/bureaucrat/jackboot/mercenary category?

Don't sugar coat it Powerchuter! Tell us how you REALLY feel about KBCraig. I certainly don't know KBCraig personally and maybe my online investigation skills stink, but from what I was able to gather, nothing I found about him screamed "looter/bureaucrat/jackboot/mercenary". I'm committed to moving to NH as soon as possible. But I sincerely hope that I'm not joining with 20,000 people who are more interested in slamming fellow FSP members for being "less pure" libertarians than themselves as opposed to working with others for liberty in our lifetime

heh, things in real life are a lot less fractious than they probably appear online. Many of us drink with Powerchuter anytime we're both at the taproom, sometimes the same day we post pretty harsh stuff on teh interweb. So there!

I would buy Rob a drink if we were at the Taproom at the same time, and perhaps he would reciprocate. Perhaps not, if he took seriously his idea of shunning certain people. (He's curiously selective in who he wants to shun, but I understand he doesn't talk IRL the way he does on teh innerwebz.) I wouldn't seek the office of sheriff in NH. The office is pretty weak compared to western states; the sheriff is pretty much restricted to running the jail and process serving, and sometimes contracting police coverage for small towns or unincorporated areas. Not that I'm interested in elected office, just responding to the suggestion. I'm also not interested in any government job as soon as I can get out of this one. I only took this one because a woman talked me into it; surely Rob understands what it's like to hook up with a crazy woman and try to keep her happy. Some of us have longer-term obligations that commit us to staying with undesirable jobs. I don't want this job. I shook Ron Paul's hand and asked him to eliminate it. Congratulations to Rob if he isn't obligated to keep insurance coverage that pays for chronic pre-existing conditions, something that isn't possible if I change jobs. If he'll pay the $33,000+ bill just for one single, recent, medical procedure, with a promise to pay any other uninsured medical bills if I change insurance plans, then I'll quit this job and move to NH tomorrow.
