Topic: Animal Keepers? (Read 5268 times)

Hi all,
I was browsing the FSP website and noticed the "interest group liasons" link. I was very surprised to see that there doesn't appear to be any mention of a link to animal keepers. Unfortunately, NH is actually not currently a very friendly state for those who wish to keep exotic and unusual pets; however, I think that the idea that people should be able to make their own decisions about what pets to own is fairly consistent with the FSP mindset. (Please correct me if I'm wrong on this one.) Even for non-exotic keepers, many states (California anyone?) are becoming more and more restrictive for agricultural animal use and dog and cat breeding as well.
Do others feel that this is a valid outreach idea? I certainly do; I know that animal folks can be all over the board politically, but I think that for exotic keepers especially there is a definite freedom-loving streak there...

You betcha! Liberty and personal responsibility is definitely in line with the FSP's mission! Everyone has issues that matter to them, but the gov't existing at most to protect life, liberty and property is something we all agree on. Do others feel that this is a valid outreach idea? I certainly do; I know that animal folks can be all over the board politically, but I think that for exotic keepers especially there is a definite freedom-loving streak there... Absolutely! This organization is a very flat one...you don't have to get permission or anything. Just do what you think should be done. Sounds like you'd be the perfect person for this job!  Hang around for awhile and share ideas with others. Some of the people around here do research, lobbying, etc with the state gov, so they'd be able to help you with any info you need. Welcome to the forum. |

Funny you should ask today--just yesterday I sent all the liaisons a message asking for recommendations about where to advertise. Send me your e-mail and I'll forward it to you. This would be a quite reasonable interest group, though it is smaller and less libertarian than our usual hunting grouns (guns, drugs, taxes and education). You don't need to buy a skunk in NH, they wander into the path of your car every once in a while. Just don't squish it.

I'm glad people agree with me on this one (you never know with animal stuff -- some people just find exotic pets so "weird" that you never know what kind of reaction you're gonna get). I will definitely get in touch with some of you folks about "how" exactly to outreach, although I guess just posting on animal-related forums is a good start. (I think I've seen at least one other FSP post on a snake forum before...) Steve -- I don't think I can email you as I don't have an email program set up (just webmail) -- is your address posted elsewhere on the site? Thanks! ArcRiley -- I had heard a rumor that skunk color morphs were OK in NH, but then someone else told me that it was just that -- a rumor -- and that all skunks are banned. I don't know of any NH breeders of skunk morphs ... I'm not actually living in NH at the moment, unfortunately (in NY for school --  ) but I do plan to move back as soon as I graduate, and I've wanted a skunk for as long as I've known you could keep them. I would have to check the state regulations to be sure one way or the other. With regards to other exotics and native wildlife in NH, as far as I know most all native wildlife is banned, as well as nearly all larger exotic mammals (hedgehogs, ferrets, etc. are OK) and all venomous species. Giant snakes, monitors and crocodilians are still legal though |

Giant snakes, monitors and crocodilians are still legal though I used to know a guy who had about 8-10 snakes. He'd let them wander around the house at night on their own. It didn't bother him, but it freaked everyone else out because in the dark, they can see you and you can't see them. Not a good idea to step on a snake when it doesn't expect it. They were huge too. *shivers* Certainly not something I would choose to own. What someone else does is their business though. |

ArcRiley -- Interesting reading. I'm surprised to see 'gators and 'crocs on the controlled list; I think that may be a recent development  You're right that the striped skunk is the only one mentioned; unfortunately, most of the folks who breed skunks breed striped, or color morphs therof (which are the same species and therefore still banned). Why the heck are raccoon dogs permanently banned? (Can't even get a permit..!) It's kind of sad that in the "Free State," you need a permit to own the free state mascot (the porcupine...) He'd let them wander around the house at night on their own. ... What someone else does is their business though.
Speaking as someone who has ~20-25 snakes  I can safely say that letting them roam the house at night is a terrible, terrible idea. It's dangerous to the snake, not to mention the keeper (if they're big), and if they are big, that's the sort of stuff that bans are made of... You're right though; they are his snakes, and it is his business; he has a right to do what he wants...  Also, they can't actually SEE you in the dark ...... They can SMELL you, though Nighttime is also when they hunt -- I have snakes that are lumps during the day that become giant fang balls at night. |

Arcriley -- do you know who is working with the other skunk species? All the breeders I see (in PA, IN, OH, etc.) work with striped.
