I'm using this account temporarily until I get my own.

Seth, I will be coming in to your "first life" tonight, and will be at the party.  Will you be there too?  Send me an IM and I will teleport you there, once I figure out the interface.  I want to get set up with a cool avatar, or "person" or whatever you call it, so maybe you can help me?  Thanks.

OK, Jason is losing touch with reality...  Wink

But seriously, Second Life is pretty amazing.  Here's a good article in Popular Science magazine about it.  Note how SL operates with very minimal "government", private property is respected, and capitalism is encouraged.  Also note the possibilities for citizen participation in real-world government.

I tried doing searches on "libertarianism" and "anarchy".  The only thing that came up on the first one was Shyfrog's super-cool Gimme Liberty bar.  The only thing that came up for anarchy was a punk club, so I doubt it has any serious anarchocapitalist relevance.  I'm currently fantasizing about the educational possibilities of developing a whole libertarian place of some sort (a town? an island? a network of linked places?) within SL.  It's pretty cheap to own land, just a few dollars to buy it and then $5/month in "rent".  Then what you do with it is limited only by your own creativity (and time  Tongue ).  Or maybe the best way to reach the virtual masses is to rent space in a popular shopping mall and distribute subversive virtual literature?  hmmm

From the Second Life documentation:

The one thing you shouldn't try to do for money is beg for it. Unsolicited requests for L$ are considered rude and unappreciated.

Capitalism.  It's what's for dinner.  Smiley

Friday, I just discovered your great blog post about our party.  It reminded me that I have to revive my blog now that I have a few things to write about.

We just decided that tomorrow we will have a little party at the Gimme Liberty Bar to celebrate hitting 100 members in our Free State Project group.   We will have valet parking for giant flying hotdogs.  This is a BYOS (bring your own shinanigans) party, but I'm confident that with our membership base, there will be plenty to go around.  Wink

I've made a new t-shirt for those attending the party tonight.
I may work on another (porc) version of it to include in the package.
All I'm gonna say is it's yellow and has sharp points...

See you tonight!

We had another hot party at the Gimme Liberty Bar last night. I Expected to reach 100 members yesterday, which was the advertised excuse for the party,  but we fell a bit short (96), so it was decided that I should be burned alive for failing to recruit sufficiently.  Live and learn.

It was still a sucessful party nonetheless, and we did have parking for giant flying hotdogs, which was also advertised.

We will be playing the Web 2.0 Drinking Game in Second Life tonight, at the Gimme Liberty Bar.

Our version of the game was inspired by this Digg article:

http://digg.com/tech_news/SHIFT_The_Web_2_0_Drinking_Game_Digg_plays_a_part#c3256354

Digg this article, and look in the comments and Digg my mention of the Gimme Liberty Bar and the Free State Project.

Cheers!

Fun party, Jason! Shyfrog, thanks for the cool Gadsden FSP T-shirts.  Ian, I forgive you for accidentally killing me with your watermelon gun.  Tongue

One of the news aggregate sites I read somewhat regularly is techmeme.com, which is where I first heard about Second Life.  Frequently there are links to blog articles about Second Life, and today there is a pretty good one on the blog Signal to Noise.

The author observes, "Considering Second Life as a conduit for thoughts and ideas, bringing real-world issues into the alter-reality only makes sense".

Speaking of real world issues, there is a great podcast interview on another one of my favorite Second Life blogs, secondlifeinsider.com.  When that blog quoted from the interview, "Second Life is not in the position of a government ... Second Life is more like a God",  I knew I had to listen.  The podcast did not dissapoint (although it took forever to load).  I couldn't help after listening that the "better world" that Linden Lab is trying to create is essentially an anarcho-capitalistic society built upon the absolute sanctity of private property.  There is also an interesting discussion of how Linden Lab operates within a framework of existing law, especially in the area of IP.  Some other key topics hit in the podcast:

Covenants
Local control
Private dispute resolution
Arbitration
Intellectual Property Law
Lawrence Lessig

My own favorite quote from that interview:  "As a business we are not interested in representational government"
Thank God!

This week's Economist has an article about Second Life, the virtual land boom that's under way there, and that corporations are trying to use SL to get "brand awareness" among young people.
