Boston Television, local radio to feature the Free State Project in New Hampshire Thursday, May 14th was a media-filled day for New Hampshire supporters within the Free State Project. WBZ-TV4 ( www.wbz4.com), Boston's CBS affiliate, came to the Granite State to film interviews with Michelle Dumas and James Maynard for an “extended segment†on New Hampshire and the Free State Project for WBZ news. In addition, Tiger Radio, 1590 AM, confirmed that they will be conducting an interview with Rich Tomasso (and hopefully an FSP BoD member) Thursday, May 22nd. The WBZ interview was conducted by Ron Sanders ( http://wbz4.com/bios/local_bio_052120504), who seemed highly interested in the prospect of “Liberty in our Lifetimeâ€. In addition to the interviews, Sanders and his cameraperson spent the day filming the sights of scenic New Hampshire, including the state's historic gold-topped capitol building. The questions Ron Sanders asked ranged the gammut from the practicality of the FSP, to how the Project might influence the Presidential election. He was always careful that his facts about the FSP were correct, and asked for more information when he was not sure about a given topic. Although the date that the special will air has not yet been chosen, it is expected that the air date will be towards the end of the month.

Was there a video made of the interview? Or a tape made of the radio interview?

Thank you. The segment will be broadcast sometime around May 30th, and I will certainly tape it, then get my girlfriend's son to transfer it to MPG, and make it available to you all. Will let you know as soon as it is ready!

This is awesome!
You know...we need to start thinking more about how to making the FSP more visual for TV now that TV stations are starting to crank out stories about us.
It's so easy to videotape a storm or a wreck, but tough to videotape an idea. I'll post a separate thread on this....

I tried really hard to get some sound bites in, but rambled a couple times... He asked me if I agreed with a statement by Buchanan, and I immediately blanked what the quote was, and started talking about Buch. Ugh. I had some answers that I thought were dead on, though. When asked about whether we could influence the Presidential race, I said (in part) "We don't expect to influence the Presidential race anytime soon. But we CAN elect two US Represetatives and two Senators" (keep in mind the reporter wanted to focus on NH). It was my first time on network/broadcast television. JM

A good thing about all this local coverage is that it's giving some of our members good experience in dealing with the media! In fact, that may be the best aspect of this whole thing, because local news stories usually generate only a member or two.

I agree. You can think of what it will be like when a BIG camera starts running (I have done local TV a few times before). But when you realize the interview is going, and you look up to see the WBZ/CBS logo on the side of the camera, it's a different story. It was good, though. I really suspect he wants this to suceed, and knows NH well enough to know it's a great, fertile place for FSP success. WBZ is the CBS affiliate in Boston, so it is broadcast with repeaters all over Mass, and carried on cable through much of New England. It is one of the stations I grew up with as a kid. Can't wait to see it. Take care. JM

I just *love* it when Hank and Dagny brainstorm!

WBZ TV has a huge audience. If the story is as positive as Jim and Michelle hope it will be, I would expect to get more than a couple of new FSP members out of it.

It's funny... they were setting up the camera, then the interview started out of the blue... no "you ready?"... lol... He asked the first question, and I looked up to see the WBZ/CBS logo on the camera, and remembered watching WBZ news with my grandmother when I was a kid. First question blown. lol... They let me start over, though. JM

Double Dose of Media for the FSP Tonight - CBS and Tiger Radio
WBZ-TV 4 in Boston will air a special on the Free State Project at around 5:40 pm tonight, Thursday, May 22nd. Also from 3 to 4 pm, Rich Tomasso and Tim Condon will appear on Tiger Radio 1590 AM in New Hampshire. According to Ron Sanders, news reporter for the CBS affiliate, the television segment could air any time between 5:30 and 6:00, so people wishing to tape the special should set their VCR's to record for that half hour, to be sure of catching the entire show. This special will feature interviews with Michelle Dumas and James Maynard, filmed in Somersworth and Keene, New Hampshire. It is unknown how many people will watch the segment, as WBZ does not subscribe to Nielson ratings. However, the network is broadcast throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and is carried on cable throughout much of New England. Ron Sanders seemed excited and upbeat about the prospect of FSP success, and it is likely the report will be very positive coverage. New Hampshire FSP supporters will tape the televised event, and will develop an electronic version of the show for FSP members nationwide to watch as soon as possible.

The WBZ coverage of the FSP report just aired... All in all, I thought it was pretty good coverage. They did three leadup spots to it, and talked about "a political revolution" and "taking over the statehouse, and dismantaling Government". Right before the story, the anchor announced it with "Imagine one state where there are no laws about guns, drugs, gambling or prostitution".... The good news is, that's the worst it got. Most of the report was very good, and pretty positive. They interviewed Michelle for a few questions, and me for one - "Do you think this will actually succeed?". Most of my footage was walking in front of the Ashuelot river, and they interviewed me in front of a waterfall, and Michelle in her home. She looked and dressed great. I had gotten a new haircut the day before, and it was blowing in the wind (to quote Bob Dylan) ). I taped it (with 2 of the lead ups), and will try to get it into electronic format, and let you folks see. All in all, pretty good.... Anchor Jack Willliams comment after the story: "Well, that'll be interesting..." JM
